More "Conventional" Small Monkeys

I was just thinking that the game is still really lacking "traditional" small monkeys from the roster. The capuchin was a great step in that direction (though I would have preferred the more common tufted capuchin), and the proboscis monkey did add to that niche, though it is extremely rare in captivity. I was just looking at some old photos of Wellington Zoo I took a couple of years ago of their squirrel monkeys, and it got me thinking that there is a depressing lack of monkey variety.

Japanese macaques aren't particularly common, and neither are mandrills (though they're closer to baboons and don't really count here). Monkeys like the squirrel monkey, spider monkey, or some of the smaller Old World monkeys such as De Brazza's guenon, the Diana monkey, or even the grey langur would be fantastic additions.

I would really like to see Mantled guereza and lion tailed macaques

Agreed. As far as animals that don't require any new systems go, monkeys are the biggest gap in the roster as far as I'm concerned, as there is so often a large variety of them at any given zoo. It's a shame that to display anything approaching the variety of a typical 'monkey house', there have to be so many species that are rare or basically nonexistent in captivity. Plus, they're such good and interesting space-fillers for areas themed around a single high-profile species (looking at you, Land of the Lions), but we just don't have a good enough spread to do that in a lot of cases.
They're one of the few things I could potentially see a taxanomic pack based around, as I get the impression they're pretty popular animals, and there's such a variety of them.
Exact species isn't a huge deal for me, but at the very least, I would want one from mainland Asia (eg. grey langur, lion-tailed macaque), one savannah-dwelling baboon, one or two tropical African (eg. colobus, de brazzas, some kind of mangabey), a large new world (howler or spider, but preferably one of each), and a tamarin/marmoset. If we broaden it to primates, aye-aye is at the top of my list for animals in general (plus a gibbon, but that would require different locomotion, so I'm not going to count it)

In my opinion the two animal families planet Zoo is missing most are primates and more antilopes/gazelles. Both families also cannot be good visualized within the meta wishlist because of its high number of Differenzen t species. And everyone wants another primates or Antilope. So I would be very happy with the inclusion of more primates.

I thought about this as well - I've looked through zootierliste to find which monkeys are most common in Europe:

Old World Monkeys (number of zoos keeping this species in brackets)
1. Barbary macaque (154)
2. Hamadryas baboon (136)
3. Grivet monkey (109)
4. Mantled geureza (85)
5. Rhesus macaque (77)
6. Crab eating macaque (68)
7. De Brazza's guenon (65)
8. Patas monkey (50)
9. Sunda pig-tailed macaque (48)
10. Lion tailed macaque (45)

For comparison, the Japanese macaque is kept in 85 European zoos and the mandrill in 64 zoos. Of the top ten above, I would most want the geureza, De Brazza's guenon, patas monkey and lion-tailed macaque.

New World Monkeys (number of zoos keeping this species in brackets)
1. Brown capuchin (173)
2. Common squirrel monkey (168)
3. White faced saki (111)
4. Bolivian squirrel monkey (100)
5. Colombian black spider monkey (51)
6. Black howler monkey (39)
7. Buffy headed capuchin (33)
8. Coppery titi (29)
9. Black handed spider monkey (25)
10. Colombian brown spider monkey (23)

For comparison, the white-faced capuchin (not classified to species level) is kept in 24 zoos. When it comes to New World monkeys, the ones on the list I would particularly want are the white faced saki, Bolivian squirrel monkey and coppery titi. I would also choose some less common species for the sake of diversity of coloration - I would, for example, choose the red howler over the black howler.

Marmosets and Tamarins (number of zoos keeping this species in brackets)
1. Common marmoset (309)
2. Cottontop tamarin (275)
3. Emperor tamarin (143)
4. Pygmy marmoset (137)
5. Golden handed tamarin (111)
6. Golden headed lion tamarin (103)
7. Goeldi's monkey (101)
8. Geoffroy's marmoset (85)
9. Golden lion tamarin (69)
10. White lipped tamarin (58)

Of the top ten, I would pick the cottontop and golden headed lion tamarins, Goeldi's monkey and Geoffroy's marmoset. Ultimately, if these micro-monkeys do come in the game, I would expect just one - if pushed, I would probably choose the golden headed lion tamarin.

I might not be the only one to think this, but I think we need a Primate Pack dlc.
  • Gelada
  • Aye-Aye
  • Sifaka
  • Howler Monkey
  • Squirrel Monkey
  • Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin
  • Eastern Black-Crested Gibbon
  • Phillipine Tarsier (Exhibit)
It might not satisfy the objective of "small monkeys" but that's 3 monkeys, 2 lemurs, a baboon, 1 lesser ape, and the tarsier.

To elaborate on primate niches missing:
  • Tamarin/Marmoset
  • African medium sized monkey - Guereza/Diana monkey
  • Asuan tropical macaque - Lion tailed/Black Sulawesi
  • Baboon - Hamadrayas/Olive/Gelada
  • Gibbon - Lar/Siamang
  • South american prehensile tail - Spider monkey/Howler monkey
  • nocturnal - Night monkey/Aye aye

I think this covers all common zoo primate niches. Did I forget anything?

Are aye-ayes common in zoos? They're one of my favorite animals, and the game doesn't have a ton of lemurs, but I feel like they'd add the sifaka before they added the aye-aye. Preferably both, though.

Inspired partially by this list, my ideal animal pack would be:

1. Lar gibbon
2. Coquerel's sifaka
3. Mantled guereza
4. Hamadryas baboon
5. Common squirrel monkey
6. Bolivian gray titi monkey (white-eared titi)
7. Golden lion tamarin

The latter two are extremely common in North American zoos, but less so in Europe I guess?

Perfect primate pack would include:

1. Lion tailed macaque
2. Mantled guereza
3. Howler monkey
4. Lar gibbon
5. Javan langur
6. De Brazza's Monkey
7. Spider monkey
Ex: Golden lion tamarin or slow loris

I would also be really happy for any kind of baboon 🤩
