More noob, more problems

This is a multi-parter.
1) Is there a "graceful" way to land on a planet when supercruise assist puts you in orbit? I've watched three YT videos and it doesn't seem to work for me. It puts me in orbit "upside-down" (I look up from the canopy to see the planet). If I try to roll around and descend, it keeps trying to jerk me back to upside down orbit. I also still haven't figured out the right time/distance, to break orbit and approach. I frequently under/overshoot the destination.
2a) What the [REDACTED] just happened here? I was doing a simple courier run on a non-hostile planet and using the low gravity jump to get across the base faster. Well, a guard decided he wanted to scan me right after I hit a jump. I tried to turn right around to get the scan, but I guess I moved to far with the partial jump and now the whole base was hostile. I tried to run away, but they blew up my ship as soon as I boarded. Clearly this security scan thing is coded for overkill. Aside from never jumping again, is there a way to deescalate these situations peacefully?
2b) As if dying wasn't bad enough, I took a massive financial hit. Apparently, skipping across a base landed me 100k in bounties. Keep in mind, I didn't fight or even pull a weapon once the guards flipped. I just ran. What is that all about? And, to be clear, I've done nothing else illegal this game.

2c) And so I wake up 70k light years away and can't get back to HIP 97950 where I still have jobs running. I get that if you and land on another base, you're done. But this wasn't my choice. Am I just out of luck and this is my home now?

How did I rack up half a mil in fines for not hurting anyone and not stealing anything?

Fly with Apex for a bit and see how they do it. There is no set method like supercruise because gravity is a factor.

It's a dystopian society where guards can kill you without due process. Guards will often want to scan you without notice ("Papers please"). Do not jump around unless you know where the guards are. This is simply achieved by making sure you scan everyone, they will then be resolved as grey dots on your scanner. There is no way to de-escalate, just don't p them off.

There should be an option to transfer or access your ship from the prison. Can't remember if Apex is also an option.

Failing missions often comes with fines. They assume you absconded with whatever goods you were tasked with holding (dystopia).

Turn off supercruise assist once you start orbiting the planet, but do not untagged the planet and/or settlement you want to land at. You just learn to get a feeling for it, I usually wait until it goes from over the horizon/dotted circle to on the horizon/solid circle, and I begin to descend. You can opt to slow down or keep the throttle up, I bounce back and forth, and if I'm at too shallow of an angle, I will even climb higher so the speed will go back up before starting another parabolic descent. Keep the approach out of the red, but also keep your speed above 2.5 km/s, because you will start to glide then and may have a looooong glide time.

On foot scanning is dumb. If you are on a roof and they tell you to stop, don't even try to jump closer or meet them at the staircase, the AI thinks you are a threat and will shoot you in the back in order to defend itself.

I'm pretty sure it is, it's been a while since I was on a prison ship. Though if they were in the starter systems, it could be locked? Transfer could be too expensive, but a free Sidewinder should be available?

  1. Turn off supercruise assist manually you don't want to fight it it's done it's job turn it off.
  2. Upside down is actually easier since you can see so don't roll unless it's a high G planet. Do not approach high G planets upside down you'll fall out of the sky when you finish glide. In that case align upside down and then just slowly roll to upright as you approach.
  3. Use the rotate view to check if the landing site is visible.
If the landing site is near this side of the planet drop throttle to just under the blue segment and try maintain about 8s estimated time to landing as you head for it.
If the landing site is on the other side of the planet break orbit turn and approach the other side.
  4. Once your height is 1/2 the horizontal distance to target aim at the destination
  5. Glide, land, done.
There are faster ways but that will get you down.

As to your second part. The crime system sucks all crimes are punishable by death. So you can avoid scans by flying over the settlement but when a guard walks up to you. You must immediately stop and wait for the scan. If the base goes red you just run and keep running for several km until you can recall your ship outside of the base area.

You got fined because you had a mission item. You failed the mission when you got killed the item is now listed as stolen so you take the failed mission penalties even though the death likely shouldn't have stopped you doing the mission. The crime system sucks. Basically step 1 at any base jump up go high to the alarm console. Kill the alarm then do your stuff.

I started long before they added SCA so still haven’t learned to use it, or really bothered to try, so I suggest selling it and putting something less troublesome in the slot.
Approaching without SCA I switch from 75% throttle (keeps you at 6 seconds to target) to 50% throttle (keeps you at 10-12 seconds to target) at 10-20ls from target then manoeuvre so that the target is on my side of the planet but near the rim then fly so I am approaching at about 45degrees before I hit glide.

No.
If you are jumping when they try and scan you you are done for.
As long as you aren’t wanted and have nothing illegal in your back pack halt immediately ata scan request and don’t move before the all clear.
If you move towards the scanner you are obviously guilty of intending to attack them, if you move away you are guilty as you are trying to flee. Either way you are a target.

As said a penalty for failing the mission.
By the way it might get worse that is an Interstellar Factors screen and I don’t think they have added their 25% fee onto those fines yet.
