More ship customization options

Someone mentioned that I should pitch my idea here so here it goes..

One of the main aspects of this game is the ship you fly, and right now as it stands, there aren't that many to choose from. Now I've heard that there are plans to release more ships in time, but one thing that stood out to me was the lack of customizability with ships. I am aware that there are skins for purchase, and that's great, but even with the limited number there are for ships, and considering they don't transfer from ship to ship, the amount adds up just so that your ships isn't stuck with the stock colors they came with. What i suggest is having a limited amount of basic paint jobs to choose from. I'm not asking for a lot, maybe just 3 basic colors, because the ones that ships come with now are really poorly chosen. I mean bright green and blue? I know there's value in purchasing skins but c'mon, that's just sad for people who don't have the extra cash to spend on additional paintjobs for each individual ship. Not to mention that there are few skins on the shop that are even worth buying. It'd be great if we could have a more neutral palette of colors to choose from for free and leave all the best for the shop. Even then, the skins for sale need a lot of improvements as well.

Now moving on to what I'm more interested in talking about because it's more important to me, I mentioned an idea I posted in the E:D Sub on Reddit talking about the interiors of ships. With every ship having its own role, however you decide to play basically determines what type of ship you'll fly. Now, with that said, this means that you're practically stuck with the predetermined interior that ship comes with. Now, this may seem like a big deal, but this limit is infuriating for some who want to play the game one way, but are forced to look at a hideous interior in order to fulfill their ships criteria to actually play the way they choose.

An example: I was pretty interested in bounty hunting, and naturally the two best ships for combat are the Viper and the Eagle. The Viper ultimately comes out on top as the best ship for combat by quite a margin over the Eagle. The thing is, the Viper's interior has what some would call 'character' where I think to myself "I paid 3 times over the Eagle for this POS?!!".

It's definitely a personal opinion, but it's also a real immersion breaker for me and quite a few others I've seen mention it before. It's ultimately unfair that others can enjoy a ship that suits them while others are stuck staring at a hideous interior if they want to have the best outfitted ship for the way they play. Something like the Eagle has the kind of style I personally love, but that's all it has going for it. It's a terrible ship if you actually want to do something in it. Now this wouldn't really be a problem because there are other ships I could upgrade to that have interiors I like that are still capable of doing what I like right? WRONG.. the smaller ships really do have specific roles, and it sucks. The only multi-purpose smaller ship is the Cobra, but you really can't expect everyone to have that as their only option, can you? The next ships with decent cockpits are in the multi-millions! Ton's of people including myself have wasted away in the 'grind' you hear so much just because they don't want to feel like they're limited in their choice of ship and covering the cost of maintaining it.

So with that problem explained, here's my suggestion. (kinda related to the top rant as well) Have a stock option for an interior that you could upgrade to fit your style with maybe even a more premium options that you could sell. Another Idea would be to utilize the same principle as the glass wearing concept and add that same concept to the interiors of ships. So you start off with a stock interior that's clean and doesn't look like you you got it from a junkyard even though you paid hundreds of thousands of credits for it, and then have the ability for it to degrade over time depending on how you use it. Now if I'm correct I believe there is already a mechanic in the game called the 'Integrity' of your ship that does exactly this. Why not build on that with actual observable results? These ideas would really make a huge improvement to the game. The current state of the game feels like you're not progressing at all. Everything feels predetermined and static, and It's why many people I've seen are skeptical about E:D's future.

I'm not asking for full on customizability here, (only if that's already completely ruled out and not even a consideration) but there really needs to be a reasonable solution to make up for the lack in feeling like you are actually a space commander, which I believe ultimately comes down to the ships you end up spending countless of ours in. Think of these ideas as enhancing personal story progression, which is what Elite Dangerous is supposed to be all about right? Right now I'm hoping this is at least some type of consideration for the future of E:D, and I'm also maybe hoping that we get a whole bunch of new ships of different varieties and decent designs so that this is less of a issue and more of a rant.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just really love the idea of what this game can become, but it'd just be so much better I had more of a choice in what type of ship I fly in my digital space fantasies.

Hey Daxwolf

Thats not a wall it's a succinct summing up of your views. :)

I do a fair amount of hunting and for me the Viper looks ok inside - I'd agree it utilitarian at best. I do like your idea for some kind of cockpit cosmetic changes/incremental upgrades.
I put forward a suggestion myself to add more cockpit animations to increase immersion for similar reasons.

About the grind thing, the only time I've done what feels like grinding is when the Luxuries thing was a bit broken and everyone was on the gold rush (v-iagra actually) lol. After a few million it started to feel like a grind so I went off and did my usual itinerant trader/bounty hunter routine (which never feels like a grind).

The grind itself leads to static gameplay which players then complain about - so don't grind.
