More than 1000 years in the future - why do we have a canopy?

It seems a bit archaic.

I would have thought that a logical futuristic design for a spaceship would have the cockpit more centralised to protect the crew/pilot and they would use a viewscreen that would run on external cameras dotted around the hull. probably built with multiple redundancies in case some cameras get damaged.

so why a cockpit and canopy??

In a thousand years, if we're still around, we'll be hardwired into the ships, no need to even use a viewscreen. That's assuming we're even still physical entities separate from the machine.

But as a human being, today, I can relate to sitting in a cockpit, looking out the windows at the view. The game was built for us poor 21st century schlubs wanting to live out our Star Wars fantasies, not our 34th century descendents. It's the same reason combat is World War II style dogfighting instead of drone machines operating at near relativistic speeds from a hundred thousand kilometers away: it's more fun this way. :D

An external camera would have to be on the outside. If it's on the outside it could be shot out. Or it could fail just like any other module. You're now flying blind.

I know it's supposed to be Elite Dangerous, but if you're going at speed at the time that would be Elite Suicide

So true. I would just jack myself up into my ship Karan Sejt style.

if we go for real realism, why even bother sitting in your ship? Just control it from a station like a Video game! No one has to die ever again !!!

Oh wait, ain't we kinda doing it already just virutally?

We are going to mars in 2027... Wish I could join them lucky bosh'tets

I've got a list of people I'd like sent to Mars. Unfortunately, NASA doesn't hire vindictive people consumed with revenge to operate their space programs. No, wait, they do...

Considering that the space stations are named after SF hacks from the 1960's-2000's, maybe the canopies are a nod to the extreme nostalgia that sweeps the galaxy millennium from now. It would be the equivalent of, say, the entire UK intentionally going back to the culture and mores of Geoffrey Chaucer. Mind you, should friend Defiled Dragon be right, and there's a good chance of that, our heirs will look at the dark ages as The Good Old Days.

You know what is terrifying about the canopies on the ships?

THEY ARE ALWAYS EMPTY!!!

Every ship flies without a pilot in the seat. Maybe they are all dead? Maybe all ships are stray ghost ships. But maybe you are in a coma and this is just a bad dream. Maybe you don't even exist. You are the ship AI, programmed to think he is a living being.
When was the last time you had to eat anything in game? Or go to sleep? Or go outside the ship?

YOU ARE THE SHIP!

More to the point.. why do we have a dirty canopy?

I know there is space dust etc but when we get a repair shouldn't we also get our canopies cleaned? :)

ps..its not my monitor

It's to keep the aftermarket sales going.

A little known fact but when powerplay is released we will be able to buy a windscreen wiper kit in various grades D thru A (D just smears it round- A however will be an auto dirt sensing miracle cleaner). Other Items will be the reversing camera kit and the Anaconda tow bar/camper trailer package.
