Authorities are saying that the gunman had an "automatic machine gun" before relentlessly spraying bullets into a crowd, killing 50+ and injuring 400+. When police stormed the rooftop of a building the gunman was on, they discovered the man had took his own life. The body was identified as 64-year old Stephen Paddock. Reports are coming out saying that this may have been the deadliest ever shooting attack in modern US history.

As to what the reason was for his massacre is currently unknown. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility, however authorities have stated otherwise. The President has announced the attack to be an "act of pure evil".

Updates:

- Paddock has never had a criminal record, other than a traffic citation.
- Paddock lived a relatively happy life, he was wealthy and had a pilot's license, owned two airplanes.
- Paddock has no history of mental illness and wasn't facing any financial issues.
- A woman was yelling out to people "you're all going to die!" just less than an hour before the massacre.
- Two windows were found broken in the casino hotel, Paddock likely didn't stay in one spot to shoot people.
- Paddock wasn't showing any previous suspicious activity enough for him to be under surveillance beforehand.
- Ammonium Nitrate, an explosive chemical ingredient for bombs was found in Paddock's car.
- Despite the US's gun laws, automatic guns are illegal, such heavy weaponry like Paddock's fully-automatic machine gun cannot be purchased legally.
- The reason why Paddock had went on a rampage is still unknown.

If your fridge breaks ISIS will take responsibility.

This is another sick, random, murder spree committed by an extremely damaged individual who was desperate to share his pain but didn't know how to do that without hurting others. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't really want to wax "Gun control" on this particular tragedy but the guy apparently had a silencer on his assault rifle. Come on, there is no need for private civilian to have that sort of device.

Where are you getting your information? I think you may be conflating the hearing protection act bill, which concerns the use and sale of suppressors, with today's mass shooting. Not surprising, as misinformation about this one abounds. No information has yet been released about the weapons recovered from the scene, other than they recovered 10 rifles. Nothing indicates a suppressed weapon was used in this shooting. Quite the opposite in fact. Plenty of clips are out there.

Some retired cop was saying it on CNBC earlier and I've seen the odd comment on twitter from it - perhaps they also saw the cop.

Nothing else.

This talk of suppressors or not -totally irrelevant!
How the hell did a civilian possess an assault rifle in the first place?!?

There's always a chance it has nothing to do with gun control--He could have bought that fully-automated LMG off the Dark Web and had it shipped in a disguised container, that can happen regardless of how much gun control there is.

I cannot even comprehend what happened there.
The perpetrator must have had mental issues.
But that is what we always think in the face of unspeakable horror.

The fact he had a suppressor is academic, I know lads that use suppressors on high powered hunting rifles for noise suppression and have used weapons so equipped, its perfectly legal. You still hear the report of the rifle as it is just reduced in volume, the round is still supersonic and will crack unless a person uses subsonic ammo, usually only available for small .22 rounds for vermin control. The problem is the gun laws in the US are a joke, sustained by massive profit making by big corporations that grease the wheels of politics with large donations and intensive lobbying. Roughly 30,000 Americans killed this year by firearms and the average Joe in the States thinks Islamic extremism is the real danger.

Look at the history of mass shootings in the US over the last number of years and think about that question again.

The clip I heard on the news wasn't auto it was semi and non silenced, he apparently had lots of guns though.

According to one of his neighbors speaking to the BBC he was a professional gambler, might explain a Vegas rampage.

The clips I have seen online has him firing contiunous bursts of automatic fire. Some of the bursts as long as 10 seconds! A standard assault rifle mag empties after 2-3 seconds in full auto, so this guy probably had drum mags and multiple fully automatic rifles.

From article at slate.com:

"If Paddock did, in fact, use a fully automatic weapon, Mandalay Bay will go down as one of the most unusual mass shootings in American history.

New, fully automatic weapons—weapons that reload automatically and fire continuously with one trigger pull—have been banned for civilians in the United States since the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986. Their use in crimes is incredibly rare, rarer even than the use of semi-automatic assault rifles like the AR-15 rifles used in the Sandy Hook and Aurora shootings or the Sig Sauer SIG MCX used in the Orlando shooting. Of the 91 American mass shootings catalogued by Mother Jones that have occurred since 1982, not one has seen the use of a fully automatic machine gun."

Let's not do the "white guy commits a massacre -> mental issues" thing. Regardless of the specific motivation, this is an act of terrorism.

Meh...America gave up its right to protest mass murders when they turned their collective back on 20 6 year olds in Ct.

This is the new America...get a gun, a few thousand rounds, and go out and play.
