Is the only option to buy another game?
I would like to play a pirate on one and an explorer on the other
So I guess I need a second account...could Frontier offer buying a second character slot on the store or offer to consolidate multiple accounts in one?

I really don t want to mix pvp/pirating with proper business and exploration and I can t be the only one in this situation

Currently you can only have one character per account, so if you want a second one you have to buy a second account. There has been talk of allowing a second character on an account sometime in the future, but there is no timetable of guarantee of this. If you do buy a second account, you will probably have to verify by email each time you switch log on.

Doing it the way I did stops you having to do that, I bought one via Steam and one from Frontier themselves, by default they installed in different places. You could also just change the install options to install the second game elsewhere. Steam doesn't allow people to buy two copies of a game which seems bizarre to me so I had to buy the 2nd one direct

So, just to clarify... it's not possible to have two profiles (ie for different family members) without actually buying two physical copies of the game?
That sounds pretty weird! I'd like my son to be able to play, but not for him to go around damaging my (excellent, of course) reputation.
Surely that would be a priority for any game developer, not least because the game is more attractive if everyone in the family can play it.

Surely you only need one copy installed and you just sign in with your other paid account?

All the saved data is server side isn't it? Or am I misunderstanding this...?

It's a perfectly acceptable model that everyone for the last 30+ years is used to. If you go to an arcade and toss a quarter in a machine, do you expect your whole family to be able to play on that one quarter? Nope. Why? You understand that a company needs to make money. A lot of us don't care about paint jobs, so they have to have a way to keep funding development and server costs. There's nothing stopping people from doing all aspects of this game anytime they want, thus one person wanting multiple slots is almost useless depending on perspective and reasoning. Add to it that this game is a huge timesink, so if you start sharing the chair, you and whoever else you're swapping out with isn't going to get a whole lot done lol

Well, that was totally irrelevant to what the discussion is about, and also completely wrong in many ways.

Currently it's easy for family members to share an account, I'm not sure if it's against the TOS, but they wouldn't know anyway (unless it's played 24/7).

OP, I'd guess that if you want your son to play with a different account, you've got to buy one for him. You can't have 2 careers, allowing everyone to have multiple logins would become very troublesome.

My brother came to visit recently, and stayed in my "computer room". I walked in and found he had logged on and was flying around..... I almost bashed his head in with a hammer... LOL! I tried to be calm, and sat down on his bed watching him zip around the system. Thank god he couldnt figure out how to switch firing groups and that the one he was on was just my kill warrant scanner and discovery scanner.... though he did die 3 times by flying close to the sun and getting jumped by pirates. A second account would have been really awesome at that point!

I would happily throw silly amounts of money at FD to buy extra commander slots for my account. So would thousands of others.

Are you listening, Michael? :)

FD will have to seriously consider the precedence of griefers using second accounts to protect their main identities though. I support the idea, so long as it is properly regulated.
