General / Off-Topic Moscow erects a statue of Mikhaïl Kalashnikov, and his AK-K7

It was designed by a WW2 veteran tank operator (presumably a T-34/85), and he had in mind a weapon which would be devastating to unarmoured and lightly armoured enemies at close range when you were in a pinch. It wasn't really designed to be pretty or have long range utilization but be reliable and deadly when you needed it, and it fulfilled that role marvelously.

Mass production reduced the price, so it became the principle weapon of armies and militias all over the world.

"Blah blah blah blah more soviet propaganda on how we made this weapon blah blah blah blah but let's not mention WE COPIED IT FROM THE HATED GERMAN MP43 so instead say some patriotic soldier of the great soviet proletariat came up with the idea whilst eating cabbage and drinking vodka." Not a bad tale easily believable but it was STILL STOLEN FROM THE DESIGN OF THE MP43.

The winner takes it all, and set's the rules :D so there you go....

Nope. :p

Of course the AK-47 borrows from previous designs - all new engineering models do whether they are guns, buildings, mattresses, or gaming controllers. But the design of this weapon was the work of Mr Kalashnikov, your obvious hatred of Soviet Russia notwithstanding.

Just wanted to say this what we have in there is the good ole copyright trolling.

The thing is ak 47 not just "borrowed" from the mp 43 but from a lot of other places too, including the chinese firework rockets... (for beginners gunpoweder) So much about this.

And the whole problematics about copyright (trolling) especially in the field of engineering is quite simple. there are a limited number of good resolutions! So if someone comes out a working idea, the other's either "borrow" or buy it, or just literally reinvent the same or at least very alike version of it. And the good resolutions to the same problematics, out of necessity are going to be brothers, if not twins.

I guess the Russian's taking a designed weapon and improving on it could be seen as a sign of respect (for the weapon). My history is a little hazy but i understand the Eastern Front was the main proving ground for the MP43/44, so Russian troops experienced it first hand. They do indeed look very similar, but that is about where the copying stops, mechanically the AK is different, and where it gets it's famous reliability from.

Correct and that's convergent evolution. because there are also a given form to an existing task. And AK's / MP43's is good.
And seems like to me once the universe find the right form the best resolution it tends to be reapply recycle it numerous times, and every time it happens the next one comes even faster and easier. This is what Pratchett called Morphic resonance.

"Growing now in only high and inaccessible areas, such as the Ramtops, Counting pines are one of the few known examples of 'borrowed evolution'. A counting pine seed coming to rest anywhere on the Disc picks up the most effective genetic code, and grows into whatever best suits the climate, usually usurping the local plants.
The other notable feature of this remarkable plant is that it produces, at eye-height, numbers detailing its precise age. Its chain of reasoning is as follows; being dimly aware that humans can tell a tree's age by counting its rings, it has reasoned this must be why humans cut trees down.
Unfortunately, within a year they were driven almost to extinction by the house number-plate industry."

-Terry Pratchett

AK-47's the choice of weapon for "freedom fighters", terrorists, madmen, child soldiers, etc etc, because the type of people who have used it the most aren't usually professional soldiers and aren't fighting using regular warfare tactics. It's cheap, sturdy, easier to maintain, and reliable, all good qualities for someone fighting using irregular warfare tactics and who just sort of got thrown into combat with minimal real training. It's nearest Western contemporary, the M-16, jams if you look at it funny.

And also a lot of regular armies.

But if we follow your "logics" we can't use clothes or even a butter knife because they are also doing it. How stupid is that?

Yep. It's also easier to get the ammo for the AK. Although give some very dodgy people involved in the arms trade 5.56 NATO rounds are not really that tough to acquire anymore either.

It is only used my the armed forces, of over 50 countries across the planet.

I have to disagree. I find the AK47 to be all brute force and not much else. I will give it points on reliability though. Dam things never break.

I have to agree, I fired the Finnish version many moons ago, the FN FAL was every bit as robust, reliable and far superior to use. The AK is still an icon of the 20th century, the conscripts weapon.

Also the 223/556 compared to the 7.62x39 is an unstable ammunition, and goes in all directions in bush country.

Andrew Eldrich, loveable nutcase that he is, made a sort of song about the AK-47. Not sure why it is on this album (which was just a massive slapping into the face of the former band members who'd against him lost in court). It might give you gun enthusiasts ammogasms though.

Win the case? :D Law, judgement and truth / justice not always the same thing.

And if the people know who or what you really are, what really happened? That verdict is nothing more just a piece of toilet paper, and being dealt like that by the public opinion. So much about this.

and i'm not even warmed up

repper for using the correct word, sometimes people use a different word :D

As long as all relevant parties consent I am not one to judge what gives another pleasure.

Besides, I'm an engineer. I appreciate any machine and I can see why people might be interested in different sorts of weapons, whether ancient trebuchets, rifles, or modern tanks.

From one Engineer to another,

We use this simple problem solving flowchart :)
