Most Comfortable Reverse Thrust Settings

I've waiting for the game to be released, in the meantime I'm enjoying the game trough backer's eyes, thanks for your videos.

I want to ask you something, I know there are several ways to set up your controllers, but...

What do you think is the best configuration for quick reverse thrust?

How do you Play it?

Do you set reverse with one button and then your throttle acts just for reverse?

Do you Split your Thrust lever, so half the way is forward, and the other half backwards?, is that possible?

Are they any good video explaining those settings?

Thank you very much for your advise

I tried it with the split throttle but found I lost both granularity (smaller travel) but also finding the middle point for stopping was fiddly (even modifying these settings.

I use an X52 and use what people might class as the missile fire button to toggle.

Right now, I'm using a hold-to-reverse button, but it's not really satisfying.
I used to use toggle-to-reverse, but that was even worse - am I the only one confused that there is no real indication if the thrust is on reverse (or am I missing something)?

I might start experimenting with a separate control, just for the reverse.

Personally, I have the thrust lever split, zero speed is set at around 25% thrust, (if that makes sense), so I have 75% for forward thrust and about 25% for reverse thrusting. I also have the 75%, 50%, 25% thrust etc mapped to convenient keys for various situations/scenarios.

Hope that helps,

Theo

Can you help with screenshots on how do you split your thrusts?, pleeeeease

Although I use a joystick to fly I use the keyboard for most things including thrusters.

I press a button to reduce the throttle to zero, then I press and hold the decrease throttle button (depending on how far/fast I want to reverse) and then I hit the zero throttle button again to come to a stop.

The indicator just to the right of your scanner has zero at the bottom and then as you accelerate forwards the line moves up towards the top, when you are reversing it starts at the top and moves towards the button. Not sure how clear that is though.

At work at the moment guys so no screenies just now, will get some on here when I get home tonight though, (around 18:00 UK Time)

There's a setting that effectively splits the throttle in two. 0-50% is reverse, 51-100% is forward.

I wouldn't use that as it's far too prone for accidentally reversing into something, and really relies on you using a throttle where 50% is clearly identifiable, though as above there are plenty that do.

Personally, I also have reverse set to button press, and I actually have it set to two different buttons.

The first button is on the top of my throttle, which allows me to quickly press-and-hold to go into reverse for emergencies. The other is a rotary on the throttle's base so I can flick the rotary around to switch the throttle into reverse mode.

In either case, when in reverse, the throttle only applies reverse thrust.

Seems to work quite well.

The only thing to remember is that regardless of whether you're going into reverse, boost always goes forward. Had a few sticky moments with that one ;)

Yes, yes I do use a split thrust lever. I'm using an old Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick (pic). To make sure the trottle axis centers by it self I've put a screw in the center of the trottledail and I attached a small refrigerator magnet on the base next to it. That way the screw (which is in the center of the dail) always 'snaps' to the center because of the magnet and gives me zero trust.

So, it's not only ED which gives me a lot of fun; but also the MacGyvering of my joystick to make it perform just the way I like it.

It's been a while since I've seen one of those sticks, I used to have one many moons ago.

Definitely have some rep for a great and innovate solution, made me chuckle too.

0 to 100% thrust on the throttle with a reverse toggle button, works best for me.

Makes the blue power efficient range end up close to the upright of the throttle when flying in either direction.

But everyone will have their own idea of what is best and at least Frontier have got the control setting system right in that you can adjust almost everything to your own liking.

I use the 50/50 split with extended deadzone. Took a few hours to get to grips with but X key is default 0 speed.

Reason is it feels like it transitions into the opposite direction faster and smoother. (might be placebo, but feels like it)

The way I find best with a Warthog throttle is simply to have full range enabled so full stop is vertical, forward is forward and reverse is back.

Some people have problems with finding the mid-position to come to a full stop, but I never have.
Having to push buttons to switch between forward and reverse is just asking for trouble imo, keep it simple so it doesn't go wrong in combat is my motto...:D

I might start experimenting with a separate control, just for the reverse.

Just try setting full range in the throttle settings if you haven't already tried. So your throttle travel mid-point becomes 0 thrust, push forwards for forwards to 100% and pull all the way back for 100% reverse.
Feels right and is fool-proof as you are controlling naturally.

I considered doing that, but since the throttle on the X-55 has no middle position that you can feel, I was worried I might jump forward or backward as soon as I undock. How do you prevent that? With a deadzone?

Iam using a Thrustmaster X hostas and my thruster is full speed ahead +100% and full reverse -100%.
When throttle is in middle its zero speed.

Funny thing is that you can go full reverse ( flying backwards) and then hit the boost, at same time you put throttle to full speed ahead and the boost kicks you to full speed ahead from full reverse in seconds :D

Quite cool tactic to use if you are chased and are running full reverse. :D

Aye you can set the deadzone if you have difficult to find the middle position.
