Most difficult to find materials (Poll)

Hi everyone,

I am working on a project that should help players (especially begginers) to find materials scattered in the ED galaxy, as my way of giving back to the community.

I need some help ranking which are the hardest materials that people have trouble finding. (I obviously have my own experience, and I've questioned my mates who play this game, but it seems like this data pool is not enough to make the conclusion as some of the materials they find hard to aquire are easy for me to find, and vice versa.)

If you have a minute, please submit your experience by filling in this poll, the combined data will then be used to progress the project.

Please select all the materials that were annoying for you to find.

Thank you all in advance!

Voted. Early days for the poll but since the three items I specified (two of which I've still never even seen a single one of) seem to have the highest number of votes so far, at least I know it's not just me. I'm not going to say what they were here, just to avoid introducing bias.

Most of these are materials not commodities, there still isn't any way to jetison and trade materials is there?

Thank you for voting :) I've upgraded 7 ships fully to rank 5 already, and I have a general idea of what the overall results will be, but I'm dedicated to make life easier for the community in regards to finding materials easily by completing my project, and this is good data that will help me do it.

I think it's too subjective a discussion, basically when you think about it anything you are presently interested in (whether you've pinned the print or not) seems impossible to find!

And by comparison everything else is just falling over itself to be grabbed.

I've just had two missions to get Exquisite Focus Crystals which I won't be able to use for ages and can I find Mechanical Components now I need them? No and only last week I actually sold four of them!

From my experience every single material in the game can be acquired in under an hour if you are doing it in a special way that boosts your chances for that material, othervise if you are doing it wrong it can sometimes take you up to 8 hours, or even several days to find one.

My project is intended to solve this by providing detailed information on how to find every single material in the game quickly, so players waste less of their time looking for these.

And what I found, if you have this knowledge and doing it correctly, material hunting can actually be quite fun and enjoyable.

It's a shame we can't trade materials fer commodities. I can't vote because I chose to ignore engineers entirely because the collection of commodities means being in the bubble which I despise. Materials on the other hand are something I have plenty off, with the only one tricky to find being antimony. I got more polonium than iron and I just yawn now when I get more arsenic. I use jumponium fer fun because I have so much of it, yet can't even make simply lvl1 upgrades with engineers...gotta love this game sometimes ^^

Engineers are easy to level up with mostly just Iron / Nickel / Phosphorus...

Just go to any engineer, find lvl 1 upgrade that uses any of the above (doesn't need to be the upgrade that you actually need), and spam it untill you are level 4 with the engineer (it takes about 80 pieces) and dismiss the upgrade completely, then simply upgrade 4 times at grade 4 (this time chosing the upgrade that you need) and vuala, you are rank 5 with them.

Hope this helps, I'll cover these sort of thing's in my project in detail.

The materials required mean spending time in the city, serious time thanks to the one armed bandit mentality. I'm an explorer with little interest or motivation to be in the bubble at all...playing there makes me wanna quit playing, hence I choose not to. When the game changes to the point where I have no choice, I shall leave quietly...currently I don't need them, hence I'm still here ^^

One armed bandit :p nice one.

What I've found tho is that you need on avarage 4 rolls to get the desired effect on any item, which is technicly not really that bad.

When engineers came out I did say "screw this, I'm out" due to overwhelming feeling of despair when finding these materials, and left for 2-3 weeks, but then I missed the stars too much, I litteraly felt like I couldn't live without them.

Once I understood some things about engineers tho I found it to be rather easy, it takes just a couple of days (on avarage 4-5) to rank up any ship fully to rank 5 upgrades.

I do respect your lone wolf style of play, but I'm certain that if you have to go one day like you said, you'll miss the stars too ^^

Hopefully when my project is complete, people won't have to

I just crossed the galactic arms over the weekend...got to a point where almost every single jump I made had to be extended with jumponium...in an unmodded aspx. Like I said, I got lots of jumponium, so range really isn't an issue so long as ye got the patience to plot each and every jump.

Been out 5 weeks and counting and not once have I ever felt the need to grind engineers. Lots of stars out here, no chance of missing them unless ye close yer eyes.

Things may change and I'll worry about it then...but right now, it's just more hassle than it's worth because it means leaving all this wonderful eye candy behind and going back to "that hateful place" for x amount days/weeks. Fact is that right now, I could still get to just about anywhere I want to go in the universe without doing that.

By all means though...figure out how to swap materials fer commodities and I'll quite happily collect as much arsenic, niobium and polonium that bubble babies could possibly wish for...I actually enjoy that aspect of the game immensely so it's win win fer me. I also have a number of "green" systems I can use within 5k of the bubble if needs be...back when I was just starting out in a cobra with a paltry 23ly range to get a feel fer deep space exploration.

Fact is, that for exploration, extending range is about the only useful upgrade they can offer and if ye can live without it...^^

OK, very good.
But still, I can only recommend then to put all the info together in one place.
This sheet, as part of the 'Engineers Database' has exactly the same purpose. Jut leave your comments there. With your help, the database and, subsequently, the inara info will get updated.

This sheet shows where to find materials and their rarities, it doesn't provide the data regarding peoples experiences trying to acquire them.

For example, in my poll so far Modified Embeded Firmware is one of the top picks, and I personaly have over 40 units of them.

As I said I'm more interested in player experience when acquiring these items, not where to find them or how rare they are, so this poll is providing that specific data that I need
