Currently I'm buzzing a spiral pattern around the system scanning them as I go. Is there a better way?

As with most things in this game, they are completely random and not tied to a certain location (unless you are doing missions and are looking for mission signal sources, these spawn around the planets indicated in the mission text).
The most efficient way to check out as many as possible as quickly as possible is by crusing at the lowest possible supercruise speed (30km/s) and check your left hand nav panel. As soon as a USS pops up, lock it as destination.
More times than not you are now already in position to safe disengage into the USS.

This will probably help. Tells you where to find different types of signal sources. If you're looking for chemical manipulators, combat aftermaths are found near planets and in shipping lanes. High grade for medium tier signal beacons are found 500ls to 1000ls deep space in high tech systems.

USS are tied to locations. Satalites are tied to earthlikes for instance..
