Most painless/straightforward way to get sensor fragment

I decided to finally unlock Palin and get the sensor fragments. I didn't want to use google to find them (and yet here i am, what a surprise) so my plan was to take passenger missions to alien sites. I took two missions to 'ship wreckage'. But the marker was in orbit. After 30 minutes squinting at the surface in the hope to see some anomalous pixel i gave up and googled. Turns out the marker is bugged and it never worked, and was never fixed. So i am done with the proper in-game way.

What is the most straightforward way to get the fragments? I.e. if possible without playing the surface navigation game trying to find coordinates i get from some wiki. Are there planets with working markers that spawn these fragments?

Thargoid sensors also spawn in a 130 to 150ly radius around the Merope system. You'll have to look out for thread 4 USS and shoot them. There is a lot of RNG involved, your best chance is to look for a Thargoid wreck, shoot the sensors lying around (2 or more I think), collect the fragments and relog. The wreck with newly spawned sensors will be there. I would actually recommend this. Yes the initial search for it is annoying and costs time, but you'll save yourself a lot of time in the end. Finding the location via coordinates isn't that hard. See it as practice, it will be faster next time and Palin has some very good paying missions where you'll need that skill. :)

But aren’t there still any correctly marked surface wrecks in this game? Do i really have to find the systems and coordinates online and then play the surface navigation game?

Pretty much, yes.

-HIP 17862 6 C A, LAT 30.32, LONG -98.58
-HIP 17403 A 4 A, LAT -34.98, LONG -141.41

Unless things changed since the last time I stopped by in October, I found enough Sensors there to do some terrible things, if I was that type of person.

I know navigation down to planet can be tedious job. But you can also improve in doing it. It's nice when I hope eventually navigation does not feel so random cause you know what you are doing.

I know. I use the 360 deg marker to align with axes (0, 90, 180, 270) and then do one coordinate at a time. Is there a better way that doesn't require external tools? I am too lazy to do the math in my head, but of course i know that i could just calculate the direction i have to go from on my location and my destination coordinates. I am sure there is some "back of the envelope" estimation for that. But then i still need to google the coordinates and planet.

Pretty much, yes.

The first one is the one with the wrong marker i refer to in the OP.

scavengers sometimes drop Thargoid Sensor Fragments when killed. I stopped off at one of the Thargoid bases on my way back from my 5000 LY trip and killed about 20 scavengers to get the 25 sensor fragments needed to unlock Palin.

The Thargoid Scout one works. Once you've scanned the data beacon, that is. Not that you can get sensors or fragments there.

Yeah it's a PITA. I hope it's fixed soon as currently the markers are next to useless..

Wants stuff, does not want to do anythig to get it... ok.

Flying to coordinates is not hard, just slow down and turn to the rights heading, even if you do one axis at a time.

If you go to the HIP 17403 crash site (on the surface, at the coordinates, not at the beacon - last time I was there that was still inside the planet!) you will find both sensors which can be shot (in the SRV) to make fragments as well as some fragments just lying around the site - think it only took me 2 re-logs to get the 25 fragments needed ...

The site can be a bit tricky to find, even going by the coordinates as it is right up against the edge of a crater within a crater.

I was going to just suggest jumping into an NHSS, shooting up a Thargoid Sensor if one spawns, then scoop the fragments

I admit that it's been a while since I visited the crash site, but are you sure you're using the correct coordinates? HIP 17862 6 C A, +30.3, -98.6 should get you there. Turn on your lights. It's dark down there. The crash site isn't lit up.

When you get close, you should get a scan detected warning. You'll need to be fairly close to the ground to see it. It's on the side of one mountain that's behind another mountain as I recall.

Close to Maia, lots of fragments laying around and you can shoot the sensors to get more fragments. It's the easiest way to unlock Palin.

I assume that the coordinates are correct. The problem is that there is a beacon above the surface and it does not match these coordinates. I was searching the surface around that beacon for ages (because i wanted to do it the "in-game way") but didn't find anything. That's why i was hoping that there is a working beacon somewhere. I guess i will just do it the established way: Take coordinate from the internet, and go there.

I think you can obtain sensor fragments by visiting a barnacle site and shooting down scavengers from your SRV. When destroyed, scavengers drop all sorts of Thargoid goodies including sensor fragments. o7

you know.. people cry about the marko quent grind, but really that was easy as pie, did it in less than an hour (hint, passenger missions ;) )

this palin grind though... my god... it's making me wonder why I even play this game lol... once I get a couple g5 DD modules made up I am sooooo done with engineers... I feel like I should be getting paid for the amount of hours of research needed to figure out where to get your mats, then the hours of mindless work to go get them.

it's not fun... it's absolutely mindless, boring and takes waaaaay too long.

can't wait to have these thrusters tho :)

Thargoid Sensors, can be found in abundance at these planetary locations.
HIP 17403 A 4 A (-34.9831°,-141.4127°)
HIP 17862 6 C A (30.3398°, -98.5876°)

This worked on Sunday. YMMV since the patch but the top one had plenty. One relog saw me with ample. Blow up the sensors to get fragments.

With a little planning the Palin 5k run can be completed in just a few hours.
