Most Underrated North American Animal

I got this idea from one of my other threads about the most underrated primates. Anyway . . .
What are some animals from North America, both already in the game and not in the game, that you feel is underrated in the community? Here are some of mine:
  • Sandhill Crane - I have a soft spot for it. I grew up seeing them occasionally in my neighborhood.
  • Harbor Seal - They are very common in zoos and aquariums in North America, but I think that they sometimes get overshadowed by the Pacific Walrus, Elephant Seal, or the Ribbon Seal.
  • Weasels and Mink - I don’t think that this group is talked about enough.
  • Virginia Opossum - The only marsupial in the Western Hemisphere doesn’t get enough recognition.
  • Gopher Tortoise - These would be the first burrowing tortoises in the game!
  • Red-Tailed Hawk - An often overlooked bird of prey that is often used in falconry.
  • Osprey - I grew up often seeing these birds as well.
  • California Condor - This might be a stretch, but I believe that the largest bird in North America deserves some recognition.
So, what do you all think are the most underrated North American animals? Feel free to share!

  • Virginia Opossum - The only marsupial in the Western Hemisphere
Not nearly.

It's the only marsupial in the US or Canada, absolutely, but go any further south than that and there's plenty of them. I only learned this as an adult myself. I'm pretty sure tons of the animal-related media I consumed as a kid did cite the Virginia opossum as the only exception to Oceania keeping all the marsupials to themselves.

That said, on topic, I think the sandhill crane, gopher tortoise, and harbor seal are both great examples. The gray seal was "close enough" for the longest time, but now in this age of three rhinos and three penguins, I'm inclined to say it's not actually close enough anymore. The crane's utility speaks for itself, and it's much more distinct from our current crane than the maybe more popular whooping crane would be. And I'm desperate for any and all additional tortoises. I'd say the opossum is a good underrated choice too, but I feel like they're not actually as slept on as they used to be.

My #1 pick would be the white-tailed deer. It's discussed fairly frequently as well, but I think it's still far too little relative to how prominent they are in both the region's zoos and culture. They're right there beside the American black bear in terms of importance, imo.

How I feel about NA animal ratings/rankings (as a local):
Temperate, Taiga, and Grassland:
The black bear seems to get a lot of unnecessary hate on this forum, which makes me sad. It's probably the only thing I critically need for NA, and color morphs are fun. At least it's still pretty high on the wishlist. I think we have a pretty decent selection of small, backyard temperate critters, and I want to see the other continents catch up a little before focusing too much on ours. However, when/if we get there, I would like to see the appropriately-rated porcupine, and the underrated American Fisher. While I'm a little put off by its rat-like appearance, the Virginia oppossum would be an interesting pick for taxonomic diversity and international zoos. I don't think it would work well mostly due to its short lifespan (3-4 years in captivity), and thus it's probably the only one here that might be overrated. The bobcat would also be a nice one to get, but if support doesn't last long enough to justify it, I'd probably be fine with a mod or something. Wapiti are awesome and appropriately rated, and white-tailed deer are slightly underrated. While I'm not sure the black footed ferret would work either, I would love to see it. It's underrated if it's a viable option due to its neat conservation story.
Most Underrated: White Tailed Deer (temperate), Fisher (taiga), and Black Footed Ferret (grassland)

Desert:
I also think the bighorn sheep isn't talked about enough. It's kind of like our "Alpine Ibex" and has a totally different range and color than the Dall sheep. It's very present in our media and would add something for the southern desert, which really doesn't have a lot. It is still well within the top 100, though. The desert could also use the appropriately-rated collared peccary and 1-3 critters. The tree-climbing grey fox, ringtail, adaptable bobcat, and jackrabbit are some very underrated options. After that, I would say the desert is complete.
Most Underrated: Critters

Tundra:
Even though it's not common in zoos, the ribbon seal (my favorite) is underrated. It or the harp seal would really stand out visually next to our current lineup. I also like the harbor seal, but its niche is sort of met by the grey. The popularity of the sea otter, walrus, musk ox, and wolverine makes sense, though I might shuffle them slightly.
Most Underrated: Black-and-white seals

Birds:
I don't have too many strong feelings about which bird (all are underrated), but I do think we should get at least two. The wild turkey seems the most useful (probably underrated given its iconicism, range, and domestic compatibility) and the wood duck is my favorite. I'm not opposed to the cranes, roadrunners, or pelicans, either. For flying ones, the snowy owl and bald eagle have appropriately high ratings. I'd also agree about the red-tailed hawk being underrated, but should not be at the same level as the other two. The California condor is a cool pick for conservation although there are other condors/vultures I'd prefer from other continents, and ospreys are neat to pair with bald eagles. I'm content with their respective ratings. I'm glad the burrowing owl is somewhat popular. It's one of my favorites.
Most Underrated: Turkey (habitat), Red Tailed Hawk (exhibit)

Other Exhibit animals:
The alligator snapping turtle is well-appreciated, but I wouldn't mind getting an aquatic turtle from another continent. The endangered San Francisco Garter Snake is pretty cool, and Luna moths are iconic. I feel like we have a pretty good roster though, and I mostly want Oceania, SEA, and Africa to catch up a bit.

While both Europe, NA, and perhaps Australia? are approaching 100% completion for larger animals, I think it's ok for them to get a few more. From what I understand, the low biodiversity means most biome niches have only one or two occupants. In some cases, like the white-tailed deer, turkey, and bobcat, that occupant fills a niche in many biomes.

In game? The Moose for sure. It's my favorite animal of that pack, a staple for most of my "all purpose" zoos, to me it's just one of those iconic animals. It doesn't get much criticism but it also doesn't get a lot of mention period.

Not in game, the American Black Bear. Sure, it has its fans, but it also gets a lot of negativity, since it's yet another bear. And I understand that, but it actually is the one true iconic mammal from NA that's not in the game. The Wolverine is more popular but not as iconic, as far as I see it. And yeah, I want the Wolverine more, but ABB is #2 on my NA mammal wants for sure.

I believe I've read several books by European authors that are set in North America with hedgehogs. As a kid, I even started to think we had them and I'd just never seen one.
I know, same. It even leads to people calling Ground Hogs Hedgehogs and that makes it a whole lot more confusing for everyone. It’s so weird that everything alludes that we have them but we don’t.

Of the animals not in the game:
  • North American porcupine
  • Sea otter
  • Wild turkey
Of the animals in the game:
  • Grizzly bear (wildlife symbol of the continent)
  • Dall sheep
  • Striped skunk (most iconic temperate animal that’s not the raccoon from NA)

From a non american standpoint:

Not in game:
Virginia Opossum, one of the few non Australian marsupials and the most well known by far. Really unique and different from everything we have so far. All that makes it imo easily the most interesting mammal that NA has left to offer.

In game:
Raccoon, this one gets alot of hate because its a bAcKyArD aNiMaL, even though to me it is THE north american zoo animal due to it being incredibly iconic and omnipresent in european zoos

I never understood the backyard animal debate. If you’re always seeing an animal in the wild, why wouldn’t you want that animal in your zoo because it’s a cool local species?

Even though it's not common in zoos, the ribbon seal
To expand on this a bit, they are literally nonexistent in zoos. A single aquarium in Japan had one, but it died back in July. The ribbon seal is hands down my favorite-looking pinniped, but with that in mind I just can't root for it over the harbor seal or I guess even walrus.

They're so cool-looking that I don't really mind. To each their own, I guess.
