Most Underrated Primate

Do you feel as if a primate that you love (that we don’t already have in the game) doesn’t get enough love or recognition from the community? Do you believe that it should be higher on the meta wishlist? Please feel free to share your thoughts.

For me, it’s the Rhesus Macaque. They have a special place in my heart. I’ve seen many videos of large troops wandering through Asian towns and interacting with people. Also, they are an invasive species in my home state of Florida (feel free to look that up), but that won’t make me like them any less.

Red Shanked Douc are so pretty! I think the is the main one I love that doesn't get many votes.

Tamarins are my loves, and I also agree with the community saying that spider monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, something from India, Hamadryas baboons, and guerezas should be prioritized. I guess there are a bunch of other monkeys in Africa that are underappreciated, and I think we'd need at least two of the smaller ones to occupy that niche in the roster. Golden Snub Nosed monkeys are also important for conservation and representing East Asian zoos.

All of the nocturnal primates except the aye-aye get overlooked despite being some of the most iconic species for nocturnal houses in zoos. Lorises, galagos, and dourocoulis would all be great. I know some have said the lack of proper lighting systems to make nocturnal houses is a turn off but that hasn't stopped us from getting other species primarily housed in nocturnal houses.

I would say mangabeys top the list of underrated primates for me personally - lots of zoos I have visited have at least one species, and they are an active, attractive and threatened group of African monkeys that are very amenable to living in mixed-species exhibits.

From left to right: Black crested mangabey, cherry-crowned mangabey, golden-bellied mangabey and white-naped mangabey

To put the 'underrated' part in context, the meta-wishlist that has been running since 2021 has only four votes for all the mangabeys (two for the black crested and one each for the cherry-crowned and golden-bellied).

But dare I say that there are a lot of African monkeys that I find really underrated, especially among the guenons and their kin. Only four species (the De Brazza's and Diana guenons, vervet monkey and patas monkey) have more than ten votes, and all are outside the top 100 most-wanted animals despite being pretty widespread in zoos. Special mention goes to the Northern talapoin monkey - the smallest of the Old World monkeys (about the size of a squirrel monkey) that is semi-aquatic, suitable for walk-through enclosures, can live in groups of up to a hundred and are becoming increasingly common in European zoos, yet so far has exactly zero votes on the wishlist.

And it’s not the preferred baboon of the community but something about the iconic troops of olive baboons on the African savannah appeals to me.

Besides that I usually see squirrel monkeys get less recognition than the other new world primates

I wish for Africa we would get at least Gelada, Olive Baboon (or Hamadryas Baboon but personally I prefer the other one), Green Monkey and something like a Red Colobus (with that I mean at least one from the Rainforest)

I think there aren't really that many People wishing for asian Monkey Species, but we should definitely get more of those too

Didn't even know that Species yet. Pretty cool and so adorable 🥰

Pretty sure that they are at least in Zoos in China and maybe some other asian Countries. If I remember correctly, even more common than Proboscis Monkeys, so if they can add that one, the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey might also someday make it into the Game
