I recently took part in the Lambda Andromeda community goal. I came in late but the promise of a discounted Asp was too good to miss. I just about had enough credits to buy it when the goal was over and enough to cover the insurance but nowhere near enough to pay for the really expensive (compared to Cobra) upgrades.
I took it out for a test drive near the station and really didn't like the feel of it after flying a Cobra for a while. It felt a little sluggish and the standard modules fitted left me feeling a little vulnerable so I parked it up and got back in my lovely Cobra to grind more credits.
Today I bit the bullet and parked my Cobra at home base, bought a sidey with a 'A' FSD and fuel scoop and flew over to Lambda Andromedae to dust off my new Asp.
A few upgrades later and I'm loving it
I fitted 2 medium gimballed multicannons (these were great on the Cobra), 2 gimballed pulse lasers on the outside small hardpoints and 2 fixed burst lasers on the inside small hardpoints.
First fire group is pulse on primary fire, multicannons on secondary fire and second fire group is burst on primary fire, multicannons on secondary fire. I think this might be a good way to mix it up for slow moving large targets vs, nippy small targets.
I dropped into a nav beacon to test the loadout and was pleasantly surprised how much better it was than the Cobra. I netted nearly 3 times more bounties in the same given time I would have in my Cobra. The Asp is almost as fast as the Cobra with decent thrusters and an 'A' rated power distributor.
I'll be upgrading again asap but for now I've just swapped the gimabbled pulse and fixed burst lasers for gimballed burst and fixed beam lasers after beefing up the power supply.
I can't see myself going back to the Cobra anytime soon as this Asp is like a Cobra on steroids
but as it's got a lovely chrome skin I certainly won't be selling it either. It'll now be my fallback ship should disaster strike. Don't fret for me though, I never fly without a big enough CR buffer for insurance
I'm really looking forward to exploration now but the Asp and I aren't quite ready for it yet
BTW did I mention the view out the cockpit - wow
Stay safe CMDR's
