Exploring in an unarmed, lightweight, high-thrust vessel seems to be the only reason to head out there. Am I wrong? Is it? Will The Missing see us as a threat? And, be there perhaps Thargoids?
I'm sure I'm not up-to-date on all the latest happenings, but I'm thinking that if FD were to add the ability for AFMU hull repairs, chaff synthesis (and heat sync, etc.), and transferring inventory/materials between players, just imagine...
We could go out there ready to encounter threats. We'd be slower-moving with the extra weight, but we'd now be pretty self-sufficient (except for replacing crashed SRVs). And, if we can share resources, a fleet of friends could last out there for months and actually interact with each other rather than just make note of where each other is and do your individual exploring. Don't get me wrong, exploring is a moving experience, and the thrill of tagging a system with your name is somewhat rewarding. But is that all there is out there? I'd be much more motivated to head out there when I know that as a member of a fleet, we can contribute to each others' well being and do some more interactive game play. I mean, let's face it, with only one character per game purchase, choosing to go exploring is a commitment to one type of game play for weeks on end! And a very solitary one at that.
With a fleet, imagine a squadron of SRVs covering ground more quickly, pooling the materials together to maintain each others' health or to provide a scout with the required jump boosts to reach that otherwise unreachable star and report back. Or, suppose I lose my SRV. I could stay above 2km and scout for POIs (that is, hold my position until a cmdr in an SRV recalls the ship and flies over to me).
I mean, as of now, POIs are pointless way out there, containing only useless cargo AFAIK. But, maybe someday, the scraps of those crashed ships might be somehow obtainable and useful? For example.. about those crashed SRVs.. imagine if a size 6 slot could be outfitted with an SRV manufacturing shop? It might take many materials and 20 game hours to "craft" an SRV, but yeah. A cmdr in the fleet with one of those would be everyone's best friend.
Thoughts? Who wants to join an armed co-op fleet and head into the unknown?
