Mount Nerverest Summit Jump (take 1)

In a fit of madness, I decided to attempt a solo 'Summit Jump' using the original Base Camp location. My intention was to power up to the 37.5km OC line and use that momentum and angle to 'launch' the SRV into a high orbit. I then wanted to leave Elite Dangerous running for as long as possible to see how far the SRV would travel and if its fuel would run out while in high orbit. I had planned on allowing for at least 5 hours drift or orbital glide.

Things didn't quite go according to plan.

My thanks - once again - the Commander Furtive Pygmy who made this astounding discovery - and also to Jackie Silver and Robert Todd for joining in on all the fun.

Tonight - as a respite - I will do a slow cartographic fly-by of the infamous Mount Nerverest so others can base any future expeditions with good mapping and route evaluations.

I shall watch these shortly :) Will you be around during the day at all tomorrow? I'm busy in the evening, but free(ish) before then... We could have another crack at this, and maybe try what Traveller_GG suggested: flying an SRV further up and dropping it off.

I shall have to improve my skills in that area, though! I was wondering if it would have helped yesterday if Jackie and I had had our shields off... Obviously a Conda would provide a better platform too. I don't have one, but I could always buy one...!

Not tomorrow, alas, as I work during the day. I tend to log into Elite Dangerous about 5ish after I come home for an hour or so until my partner comes home - and then back in again later on in the evening if it is suitable!

I don't think we can drop a Scarab off higher up but it is worth a shot. As for the shields, not sure but again worth an attempt to find out! I have sidewinder now as the CG in the system is proving dangerous - the other day, my Asp E was reduced to 9% hull by another Commander. I can't risk the rebuy costs too often as I only have a few million credits saved up!

I'm self-employed, so my hours can be a little unusual :) Might catch you from about 5 to 6pm, though.

Yeah, I reckon it'll just fall through above the clipping height, but that in itself would be interesting.* And yes, the CG is an annoyance – will be glad when they've all moved on!

I've totally caught the mountain-climbing bug now! Once we're done with Nerverest (not that I think we're anywhere near done – there must be some other landing sites, and there's the rest of the mountain chain too!), I'm curious to see what other peaks are out there…

*Also, there were some places where I couldn't land on Saturday night (because they were above 32.6km) which were nevertheless solid, and looked like excellent (insane!) dropping-off points.

these videos are awesome Cmdr!!

Pity you couldn't dock with you sidey at the end...maybe try it when you have momentum.

And of course I love the fact you are flying a sidey!

Terrible shame we can't ever do a ship dock in mid air...like taking a jump in the SRV at the crest of a hill with our ship hovering low on the other side just out of sight, like that first scene with the reavers in firefly ^^

I agree - let's check out more of this small planet for other escapades! I will log in tonight and do some scouting.

Interesting thought about the docking but when I did have momentum and recalled the sidey, it flew below me and attempted to land on the planet's surface. It only appeared in front of me after I lost drift, alas.

That would be awesome - love that movie, by the way!

Used to love finding big mountains and just landing at the bottom of nearly sheer walls with the mouthwatering prospect of getting to the summit...even when said endeavor becomes an hour of careful driving just to roll backwards straight back down just inches from the top while yer fist hovers close to the point of going through the monitor.

I used to think it was just me because I used to have a thing fer downhill mountain biking...nice to know I'm not the only sicko in the game that loves this sorta crazy pointless stuff...I gotta get out more ^^

Hahaha . . . that sums me up exactly! If you get a Vive or Oculus Rift, it changes everything and makes these mountains and gullies so much more spectacular!

Still in two minds although my daughter keeps showing me clips about how class it is. I have tried it on a m8's setup, but only got a couple minutes and it was just some zombie fighting game but yeah...I would love to get it setup fer here so time will tell. From a money aspect, I really wanna get the pc sorted before adding more bits on and at the age of this machine, the most practical option is a whole new rig. We shall see, but from I've seen and heard, its really just gonna be a matter of time before I take the plunge...boys and their toys mentality at play ^^
