Mount Neverest finally gone?

Took a trip to Nervi 3A, and no mountains at all. Just a boring flat planet?

Please tell me this is just a bug in the new planet tech?

I'm sure someone said they were going to manually preserve some favourite features from Horizons, like Mt Neverest and some fan favourite canyons.

It's a bit of a let-down so far.

They've shuffled all the planets around. Some of the ones that were boring are now interesting, and we've lost most of the previously interesting planets.

Does anyone miss the old terrain of Horizons? I just logged into ED:H for the first time in ages to go and see Mt. Neverest...never been there before. I then logged into ED:O at the same coordinates and it looks like the miners went completely megaton and removed the mountain. There is just pittish terrain now. The new terrain engine for ED:O really did take away the uniqueness of alot of sites. It's a shame....

It is fundamental to procedural generation that when you change the procedure, what is generated changes completely. This is what has happened between Horizons and Odyssey. It's inevitable that the most extreme and interesting (and least likely and hardest to find) Horizons terrain is going to become average, boring terrain in Odyssey.

It appears that Odyssey's terrain is less extreme than Horizons - the mountains aren't as tall and the canyons aren't as deep. Craters are missing a central peak that is regularly found in Horizons.

If Frontier do address these issues, they can only do it changing the terrain generation procedure - and everything will completely change again!

Above the majestic Mt. Neverest is where I retired my CMDR for the time being.

And thus, the one fundamental Elite Dangerous promise is being broken: the one of a persistent universe.

"Great unique discovery you made there. Shame we have to remove it with the next update."

You broke that promise too by retiring your commander.

I recently fired up Horizons to pay a visit Mt. Neverest.
Landed near the top and had a lonely picnic.
Had no hurry to leave as Horizons and Odyssey won't be merged anytime soon.

Stick to that though and nothing could ever be improved. You can argue that Odyssey planets are worse than Horizons planets, but Horizons planets certainly weren't perfect either, it would be a shame to think that there's zero chance of improvement due to persistency being used as a reason to never change anything once it's been introduced.

I don't think that's possible. AFAIK, it was all or nothing type of change.

Indeed it was a all or nothing.
The planets are generated by their respective seeds.

Although i do find the new planetary tech a bit boring since it seem to generate mostly flat terrain or with really low features - like 1km mountains
Horizons old planetary tech was maybe less realistic in its approach to generate planetary surfaces, but it was definitely better at creating more dramatic planetary bodies.

Another example is the Planetary Base Prospector's Deep (I think it's called, correct me if I'm wrong) in the system Mbooni

Average bumpy hilly terrain, where as the base is sat on a 5-6km tall lump of land with nearly 90 degree cliffs.

This seems to be the case for now, but let's not forget that the current set of popular vistas took over 5 years of exploration to discover (for instance, personally I've never seen anything outlandish either despite clocking hundred of thousands of LYs). It's not a given yet that there aren't any spectacular bodies out there.

I prefer the new terrain a lot more. However, FD really need to ensure all visitor beacons are checked to make sure they still give good sights or remove them or manually change things so the feature is restored.
