Mouse anyone??

Hi fellow pilots

I played Elite a while back now (1985) on my old acorn elctron and have just ordered the game for December 16th so have had a bit of a break from the game.

I have seen a lot of posts about this and that Joystick but as I have been an EVE player (dont flame me been waiting for Elite ) since Beta have got used to the mouse keyboard combo.

Is this game still playable without going out to spend almost £100 on a all singing all dancing Joystick ? I like the easy life where i can just turn on and play for a bit without setting up the joystick on my desktop (not that i have used one for many years now)

Thanks for any input

I've seen those posts too. People claiming you need a joystick to be competitive. but it's nonsense. I am a very confident pilot using just my mouse and keyboard and I wouldn't have it any other way. Though since b3 I've had to tweak the settings, to stop it constantly auto centering, otherwise you'll need one massive mousepad..

I play with Mouse and Keyboard and am quite happy with it. I also use Voice Attack for many of the ship functions as it saves me having to look down too much when in combat. I also spent a good sum getting the TrackIR5 which has really helped me become more immersed in the combat plus it makes it a lot easier to keep an eye on targets!

I tried keyboard and mouse. Hated it, spent £50 on a nice joystick with a built in throttle control. Although I use voice attack for most things now, only use the throttle control for docking.

When i bought this game i've been thinking about to buy a joystick for the first time and i bought one. After that i had to realise that i'm so attached to the mouse&keyboard combo that i can't get used to the Joy ( maybe with a better one i don't know, i'm talking about the HotasX ) . So if you're more like a mouse&keyboard user then just stick with that, you'll feel the game much comfortable, especially if you had to create a thread for this because you're confused. Anyway why should anyone flame you for beeing an EVE player? That's a great game, a different one but great.

Hi there!

I saw your thread an thought, that you, as mouse and keyboard user can help me.

I started playing ED yesterday but I could not figure out how to make the ship turn/gear more rapidly.

I bound "gear" to the mouse axis, but cranking up the mouse sensivity did not help.

Does the ship really turn/gear so slowly, or is this due to to some Settings, I have not found yet.

Or: Does the turning/gearing Speed depend on the type of ship?

There is a maximum turn speed, which is quite slow on some ships. I recommend turning off the auto centering of the mouse also, otherwise you wont be able to hold yourself at the maximum turning/roll speed.

I play with both mouse/kb and an x52 depending on what I am doing. For the most part there isn't much difference but having the ability use more buttons simultaneously does give you a slight edge in combat. Unless you want to get ultra competitive in pvp then sticking to mouse/kb isn't going to hamper you at all.

Make sure you have... I can't remember what it's labelled as now, bah! There are two boxes you need to uncheck in the mouse controls bit. What's it called again? When you have them on though it takes about 20 minutes of frenzied mouse work to move about 3cm. It's like brushing a horse while on crack or something.

I really wish they'd sort the default mouse controls as the amount of people struggling with it when first starting the game is staggering. I was one of them. My pal didn't even play for weeks after buying it as he was just rolling all over the place until I helped him with his controls.

Relative mouse axis! Make sure they're both OFF otherwise you'll never be able to move much.

Cheers Muldeh BUT! I would recommend people first try it with mouse x-axis on Yaw. I find the ship impossible to control when it's set to Roll.

Another mouse/KB user here.

I had 2 HOTAS joysticks (X52 Pros) but the one in the UK I obviously can't use (being in the UAE) and the one here I broke ... Since then I have gotten used to KB/Mouse and it's OK.

I don't agree with that at all!
Yaw is used for fine aiming only imo, which works good with mouse obviously.
BUT just enable roll into yaw for that and you can still roll for quick turning with the mouse.

I and a few others I've encountered, couldn't control our ships at all Zarunoi, until changing it to Yaw. I'd say it's definitely something to try at least, if you're having difficulty.

i played this on BBC computer when it firs appeared, on thing i find very confusing now and then was when you pull back on the mouse the nose goes down NOT up as it would if you are flying.
On the original game this could be reversed, can it on this ?
Thanks
