Mouse Control tips

Can anyone offer any advice on setting up mouse control? Or at least, something as similar as possible to how Oolite controls feel?

Keyboard doesn't seem to be cutting it for the combat scenarios, and even with the mouse sensitivity set to maximum it seemed to require far, far too much mouse lifting. It's probably mostly an adjustment issue, but I haven't found a set-up yet that doesn't feel like I'm fighting the controls.

When I used mouse I liked to have the mouse do pitch/yaw. WASD for lateral thrusters and QE for roll. Then my mouse4 and mouse5 thumb buttons for throttle.

i'm not sure why you would need to lift the mouse since in ED you don't need to keep moving the mouse to make the ship turn like you do in a game like War Thunder. You want your sensitivity set so that you don't really need to lift the mouse and are just moving around a central point. Maybe its a problem if you have standard mouse and small pad. I have high dpi mouse and an a3 sized space to use so that hasn't been an issue.

This is exactly how I had it set up except I used R/F for throttle up/down. I think the trick to making the mouse work is with the Q/E being used for roll. So much more maneuverable.

I've got it set for pitch/yaw, as pitch/roll always felt like something of an oddity. I prefer absolute mouse movement, so facing moves when the mouse moves, and stays still when it doesn't. Lifting sometimes has to be done, but it's quick and easy as a rule. Can't remember if Oolite actually supported that mode or if I was just better with the keys when I was playing it.

I think the real problem is probably that the scenario Sidewinder seems to turn like a cow, so I can't get it to turn fast enough for it to feel like I'm actually controlling it. Do rotational thrusters get more effective with more power diverted to the engines?

I should train myself to start using lateral thrusters, anyway, seems like they might be better for small target adjustments. Horrible case of pulse syndrome at the moment; one shot too high, next shot too low.

Thanks for the responses so far.
