Mouse controls are sub-optimal at the moment, regardless of the excellent amount of configurable controls, when compared to plenty of other space sims like freelancer or (at least some of) the X-series games, and plenty of others.
The problem in my view is two-sided:
A) While the current arrow-type mouse cursor is ok'ish, it's still an overly complicated approach to a relatively simple problem: Many times, you would benefit from knowing the exact position of the cursor, because in many time, you really need to be very very precise.
B) The other problem is the flight assist, where mouse controls are useless, unless you apparently go to menu every time you toggle FA off and change the mouse so it returns to center automatically, which on the other hand makes normal gameplay unplayable with mouse.
For this I propose two solutions independent of each other:
Solution 1: Make mouse cursor a simple circle that's always visible. This is how the other kinds on the block do it, and with a very good reason. That's how mouse generally works: with a cursor, that's visible. Deadzone visibility would also help here a bit.
Solution 2: For the Flight Assist: Add a mid-level flight-assist, which retains pitch and yaw assist, but disables thruster assist. This would mean, that you'd retain accurate control over rotation, but could still pull off those fancy micro-g maneuvers, as spaceships were meant to
