Mouse controls?

Hi everyone,

I've watched a bunch of videos, and the game looks quite impressive! But everyone I've watched seem to be using a joystick or gamepad of some kind, there doesn't seem to be much info concerning mouse controls.

For those of you in the beta, are any of you using mouse/keyboard combo? how is it? Does it feel natural? are you severely disadvantaged compared to joystick users?

There are players that are very proficient with KB/M controls. Personally I do not see large difference between KB/M controls but I need the rudder pedals.

IME the big step up in controllability comes from keyboard -> throttle rather than mouse -> joystick. Infact I use a throttle/mouse combo at the moment even though I have a joystick.

Mouse controls can be difficult. Don't get me wrong, the game has AWESOME control config options, you can use absolute mouse mode, relative mode, you can mix in yaw on roll in multiple fashions...

But for me, mouse control didn't feel as fun as a stick, and that even though I am normally a mouse guy. The ships are very large and have a lot of mass, and controlling them with a mouse just didn't feel as pleasurable to me.

TL;DR: The game is perfectly playable with a mouse, but it's not for everyone. Do get a joystick, this game is totally worth that little extra investment. Get an X52 if you want the full package, but any joystick with a little throttle lever suffices.

Mouse control is excelent, the worst part is that roll is set on mouse as default and that makes it feel terrible, that doesn't work at all, but once you put pitch/yaw instead and bind QE to roll left/right instead and AD to thrust left/right (strafeing) och just have to fly a bit and get used to it and you will have perfect control of the ship almost as if it were an FPS shooter game.

This should be the default settings imho. Tried it with the original settings, hated it, bought a joystick. After that someone gave me the advice above, and now I'm flying mouse + keyboard again....absolutely having a blast. I also set mousewheel forward to max speed and mousewheel backwards to 50% speed. That makes dogfighting and turning a lot easier.

Agree, I put up/down strafe on the mouse thumb buttons and classic WSAD with mouse aim (pitch/yaw). It's not a flight sim, so why play it like one, ever seen FPS player with a joystick?

It's all about using strafes, disabled assists and backward movement to confuse the enemy, not letting him on your 6 and mouse-aim for the kill. So far, mouse and wsad never let me down. If some can achieve that with a joystick, fine with me.

Thanks for the replies! It's good to know that mouse flying isn't disadvantaged or weird. I quite dislike joysticks, and have no room for one on my desk anyways.

One more question, for mouse aim, does the ship follow your mouse cursor (like x-rebirth) where the ship will point forward so long as your mouse is in the center, and move at it's maximum turn rate when the mouse is to the top or sides of the screen?

or is it more like Battlefield where moving the mouse down points the ship up in proportion to how much you moved the mouse down? (resulting in a lot of scrolling with your mouse if you're in a death spiral)

I hope that's clear, it's hard to describe.

Mouse and keyboard is definitely very do-able, especially if you're dominant at using mouse and keyboard for other flying games. Actually I fly better with the mouse and keyboard than my HOTAS.

I think it took me around half an hour to fully adapt to the flight mechanics, and around the same time to tweak the controls. Pretty much flying with the correct settings and a mid-sized ergonomic mouse feels exactly like flying with a joystick. It just feels great!

The only problem with the m&k is the throttle control; but once you assign values to each key-press - it feels like you're cheating .

PS: If you do decide to give it a try, just make sure you toggle on the relative flight mode and rebind all the lateral thrusters keys. Btw go for the pitch and roll model with some yaw on initial roll ;).

EDIT: Since I always take my time to write my posts, I completely missed your question. Anyways before the beta, they offered both flight methods. However now they've simplified it to:

A) "Normal" - Virtual joystick
B) "Relative" - Virtual joystick that resets to the centre as soon as you cease input

Pretty much option B is the perfect mix between your two examples; If you set your mouse sensitivity high enough you barely need to move your mouse, and you rarely need to reposition it since the system does it for you.

It is like this, but the mouse cursor only travels to the edge of your HUD. There's little movement required to reach max turn rate and you can also saturate it, so the movement is slower at center for easy aim and faster around the edges. All in all, very easy on your hand. Joystick requires more exercise.

Problem I have with the mouse controls is they are a "fly by wire" style. Which is fine for a 3PV game like Warthunder, but it sucks balls for a 1PV game.

It took me some time to get used to the system, and even then I still do not like it as it feels...clunky (both types).

What IS needed is the option to have both the FBW system and, normal mouse controls, where there is no silly little arrow that your ship follows. Game is amazing, but that one little bit is still taking time to get used to, since every 1pv game in the universe doesn't use this stupid fly by wire system.

like I said, it works for a 3rd person game like War Thunder, it doesn't work for a 1st person game like ED.

(as a side note I am getting a HOTAS system since my xbox controller is a little warn out and the game will not detect my Saitek AV8R-02)
