Mouse friendly maps interface please

Please put some work into making the maps UI more usable for mouse and keyboard users.

In the fourth year of Elite Dangerous release, using a mouse on the galaxy and system maps remains an exercise in frustration largely because mouseover causes the focus to shift in system map and popups in the galaxy map. These have not been thought through for mouse use and are highly obstructive as below. I dont know how well it works for gamepad users, needless to say the mouse is not a gamepad and the two controllers need to be treated differently in ways appropriate to each.

There are system popups popping up everywhere when you try to navigate the galaxy map with a mouse as they inconveniently popup on mouseover which cannot be avoided due to the density of the systems. Exacerbating this they always locate towards the middle of the screen and then persist for too long after the mouseover has ceased, continuing to block selection of the other systems behind them at the center of the FOV that you want to examine, which is again exacerbated because the popup persists even longer while your mouse is over it. If popups could be easily dismissed with say a right click it would be better but they are popping up in the wrong location in the first place and should popup to one side of the screen, say top or bottom right corner, out of the way, so you can mouseover anything in the field of view without obstruction.

With the system map, just mousing over an item changes the focus of the info panel readout on the left side. So if say you select a station and choose the info panel tab and need to scroll the left info panel because the info goes off the bottom of the panel, you have to bring the mouse pointer off the item and over to the panel to scroll it, but if you then mouse over a sun or asteroid belt or any other icon you lose focus on the object you are trying to study and have to start again and trace a path from item to panel with the mouse pointer not touching any other icon, which given the layout of the system map is often a very tricky little minigame in its own right but is frustrating when you are in the middle of trying to discover a useful destination or avoid picking up a mission for prohibited goods! A minor inspection can take far longer and be far more laborious than it ought. With a mouse, item focus for info panel should be locked so as not to change on mouseover of another icon with a single LMB click on the icon and then unlocked with RMB in any location or another LMB on another icon, to enable the mouse to move across the map without changing the info panel focus. The way it is at the moment would be funny if it was not so obstructive.

The UI for PC kb/m(+js) is one of the main reasons I havent gotten into Elite despite getting a lifetime pass and DDF membership at the Kickstarter. I am a big fan having played the BBC Acorn micro version to elite status in the 80's and am disappointed the interface is so unintuitive and difficult to use with a mouse keyboard and joystick in ED as in my heart I always held Elite to be the epitome of intelligent design, which is why I feel hopeful these mouse issues will be recognised and rectified by FD. I understand other priorities have taken precedence like console and CQC and Jurassic World which is a remarkable product (which I own and play, being a zoology grad I find it very interesting) but please recognise this is a priority and fix it ! :)

Well thanks for agreeing @FrogsFriend , a curiously appropriate monicker given the circumstances :) but you are right to say that you agree so that FD understand I am not simply a lone pedant.

I hope FD will take a look at the mouse UI and understand this is not pedantry, its fundamentally user unfriendly for mouse users atm.

In VR it's even worse... the mouse cursor in the system map is completely offset. You never know what you click. FDEV should at least flatten the view to reduce the problems

100% Support this suggestion. It drives me batty every time I have to access the maps for exactly the reasons you list.

Thanks for showing your support for this suggestion Ayerc, batty is a good word, likewise.

This sounds like another issue obstructing using the map UI with a mouse controller and in VR, which I still have not tried, it must be distinctly disorienting to boot, demonstrating that FD need to give the maps interfaces some TLC, especially for mouse controllers for both VR and normal flat screens because it is getting in peoples way when they are trying to play this wonderful game. :)

/agree OP

Mouse hover needs to be completely removed from both map screens.

There are some station services quirks that are anoyying as well but workable.

The galmap pop up flags are about the only issues in a myriad of bugs that truly initiate those "GRRRRRRR!!!" moments for me. That is to say, barely containable rage quitting moments...

After all the years no one has found any .ini file hacks to fix this?? Seems like 'on_hover=FALSE' should be a quick fix.

FYI, right clicking on empty space will remove the errant flyout at least until you select another system, then it's back to constantly popping up in your face again.

Glad you agree.

FYI, right clicking on empty space will remove the errant flyout at least until you select another system, then it's back to constantly popping up in your face again.

After testing it carefully I am not sure that is the case, the time to disappear does vary per popup but is typically around the 500ms mark and there is no distinguishable difference between moving the mouse away and moving it away and then right clicking, I think its an illusion cause by coincidence of timing, certainly right clicking on the popup does nothing except keep the popup in place because you are mousing over it, it does not dismiss it when it should.

500ms is too long if you have to move the mouse away and wait for a popup to disappear before you have another go at mousing over another system, the popup should be possible to dismiss without moving the mouse, by right click.

The only way to dismiss a popup at the moment is to mouseover another system, which is only possible if the existing popup is not covering the system you want to examine. If it is you have to move the mouse away from the area you want to inspect, possibly mouse over another system if you dare to accelerate removal of the obstructing popup and then mouseover the system you wanted to mouse over in the first place but make sure you dont accidentally mouse over any adjacent systems as you get close to it or you will have to repeat the process all over again, as an accidental popup close to the target is likely to block mousing over the system you are after. Ergonomic this is not. There are a lot of systems to inspect, so doing this all the time is not satisfactory.

Also left clicking a system does not pin the popup either and you have to try to get the mouse over the popup to keep it there without going off the popup, which is the opposite problem when its the popup you want it has a tendency to disappear when you want it to stay.

IMHO with a mouse in the galaxy map the solution is to have mouseover popups but locate the popup out of the way, either in the bottom right of the layout or a floating movable location which users can position by dragging an existing popup to any location which is remembered and is where other popups will always display until moved again or in its own tab on the Universal Cartographics panel on the left side, with a line as currently indicating the system it represents, allow LMB click on system to pin a popup and allow RMB click anywhere to unpin and dismiss a popup.

I just want to point out that after "Beyond - Chapter Four" update the interface remains as it was, obstructive for mouse users in the way described above.

Which is why I am still not playing it and cannot recommend the game to anyone.

Despite your best efforts Frontier, you are neglecting the core experience, which is a mistake.

The learning curve of this game is steep which I accept. Its fine if a game has complexity, depth, and learning challenges, I like that. But it shouldn't be steep because of difficult UI. As a noob player I found learning to fly a ship (keyboard & mouse controls) much easier and more fun than overcoming the clunky controls for the maps and ship menus.

+1

Not only are these pop-ups in the galaxy map annoying, they tend to stick around for longer than necessary and clicking anywhere else tends to send you zooming away hundreds of lightyears. Adding insult to injury you can't even cancel the zoom.

Dear F.Devs,

<this-is-serious>
I see a lot of changes in the game. I can imagine how hard you working. I see your souls in each and every rock on the planet, every screw in my ship, I see your sweat and blood on the floor of the docking bay. I really love you all. (end of serious )

But I'm not very likely to buy ARKs. See... mouse behavior on the galaxy/system map makes me just a little bit angry. Happy people are more likely to buy something.
You should know better than anyone how much time people spend on map screens.

Please, elevate priority for this issue. Make me more likely to buy something. Make me happy. I'll buy all your ARX! 💙

Yeah that's totally how that works...
