Newcomer / Intro Mouse & Keyboard and a few other questions

Hi Folks,

Just a few quick ones really. Most people I have seen playing Elite, whether it be on Youtube or what not seem to be using Joysticks and Throttle Controllers. Is it worth getting this game and using Mouse & Keyboard. I really can't afford the luxury of added extras at the moment so I'm wondering if it's better to wait or start now. Also, time wise - I don't have a huge amount of time these days, would I still be able to get some enjoyment out of Elite from a few hours here and there?

Thanks in advance for any responses :)

There are plenty of people playing with Keyboard and Mouse.

Yes, it is worth it. It just takes getting used to and fitting the mappings to what feels most comfortable. I'm even ready to bet that there are people out there with the original Elite mappings... :D

Absolutely for starters it's free so no new hardware needed (unless you already had a joystick) but also some of the craziest flying stunts can be accomplished easier with K&M since your input is immediate.

Personally I tried it thinking back on my Tie Fighter days and did not get a good feel for it so now I'm back to the keyboard and it works great for me.

I joined in Beta and have been playing for several months with mouse and keyboard, the game is perfectly fine this way though if you have the money it does seem that hotas and head tracking do add to the experience (though far from necessary). The only exception is possibly if you're going to be doing pvp when they can give a slight advantage. I initially mucked about with the defaults, but I am now back to the original settings. It took a little while to get used to but they actually seem to work best (at least for me). As to sparse/occasional play elite is very much a sandbox mmo game and not a "traditional" mmo. Ultimately I started enjoying the game far more when I got off the ship grind (I upgrade when and if i can but don't worry about it otherwise) you don't have to have the biggest baddest ship and its not a race to lvl 100. I picked a minor faction at random and decided to help them out, it can be frustrating as it feels is if everyone else is working against them, but logging back in seeing how "my" faction is doing and then trying to make up for lost time is fun for me

Hi if it helps you I use an OLD Saitek Cyborg Evo stick and the keyboard. It totally transformed how I play. docking is a breeze as is combat. the stick gives me throttle and yaw control which is vital.

You shoul dbe able to get an equivalent stick a lot cheaper than some of the newer multi component sticks out there as well.

good luck!

I too have been playing since beta with a mouse and keyboard. Growing up poor, I never could afford the fancy joysticks of the day. Now that I am older, I find a joystick difficult to use compared to a mouse and keyboard. I have no problems operating my ship in or out of combat.

I assume that's satire there when you reference level 100, at least I hope so. I haven't done much research as of yet into the game but I hope it's not level based.

Here are my settings for mouse and keyboard. I alternate my right hand between mouse [for shooting and landing] and numpad [for 180 turns and SC mode, and power management arrows]

Here is my old landing footage with these controls - at that time I was very proud when I nailed it:

Yeah, sorry, oops!. No levels there are ranks but these are indicative of relationships with factions and status with the pilots federation, they are not neccessary, you wont suddenly find your ship fly's faster and your guns do more damage if you go from harmless to mostly harmless.

edit: flys/flies? god my brain is going into meltdown!

Wow nice landing, very stylish ;)

Awful landing, disgusting spacelane sensibilities, complete disregard for station safety... and absolutely NO consideration to the poor minimim-credit workers who now have to panel-beat the Viper streaks out of the landing pad.

Typical arrogant boy-racer Viper pilot, really. I read in a GalNet history special once that 20th Century drivers of certain German vehicles had this exact same attitude... I sincerely hope the station got your registration, mate!!

:D

I didn't like the controls at all at first. Mouse was too crazy. But I changed the X-axis on the mouse to YAW and the A key to left roll and the D key to right roll. Much more finese and accuracy for me. And learning that X is full stop really helped with landings.
