Ship Builds & Load Outs Moving from Cobra to Vulture

So currently I'm flying this Cobra MkIII. I'm undermining for merits for Arissa Duval in it at the moment - I also flit between rare trading, bounty hunting and smuggling on occaision. It's great, I love it, happy I've got everything upgraded.

I've been thinking about trying a Vulture for combat - undermining, bounty hunting etc - and after getting totally minced by one that I interdicted last night, I'm really keen. I have about 5.5 mil in cash on me, so not much for anything other than buying it and putting a couple of size 3 gimballed pulses on it (I'm still not quite confident enough with my HOTAS to move to fixed mounts, getting there though).

My question is, do you guys think it would be worth trading in my Cobra towards the Vulture, to spend a bunch on upgrading it straight away? Thinking shields and thrusters would be the priority then whatever else I can with the leftover cash. I also don't know what I'd get for trading towards, is it about what the Shipyard link above tells me the ship is worth?

You get all cash spent on equipment back if you sell them separately from the ship, if you sell the ship together with the equipment you will lose 10% of the value. Ship selling price will always be 10% off the purchase price so go into outfitting and sell the stuff manually!

If you want to travel a little extra, you can go to a system exploited/controlled by Li Yong-Rui to get 15% off the price of both ship and equipment.

I used around 11 million on my Vulture, with this being the build (note that this was before the change to shield cell banks) and it served me well before going to a Fer-de-Lance.

What I would use now instead would be a bi-weave shield generator and remove the SCB's to fit better thrusters for the extra maneuverability.

Great ship for combat, but not so much for trading as you might have figured out.

Thanks for that, that's great to know! I'll get a look at your build later on - coriolis.io is blocked at my office >< It's looking like it'll be worthwhile to sell the parts etc first then... Planning to move to a Fer De Lance after Vulture, once I've made a bunch of cash though obviously. :p

They're both great ships. Personally I'd stay in the Cobra for a bit longer and build a bigger cash cushion. As Devantejah mentioned the Vulture is fantastic for combat, it'll knock your socks off, but it is nowhere near as flexible as the Cobra. One of the biggest mistakes I made in this game was moving out of my Cobra too early without enough cash (to an Asp) and getting really frustrated. I actually didn't play at lot for a good while because of that mistake. I wouldn't want you to do the same.

When switching to the Vulture I would also make sure to have a plan for the Cobra. Don't completely strip it or sell it outright. Have a build planned for it that will complement the combat activities of the Vulture - something like a dedicated smuggler build or even an exploration build if that tickles your fancy. That then gives you the opportunity to switch ships and play styles as you wish. Just takes a bit longer to set up.

This is my RES/missions build for my Vulture. The cargo rack is there for mission flexibility. If you want to do assassinations you can pull out one of the HRPs for a 1A FSD Interdictor and downrate one of the Shield Boosters to a OC (+12%) to keep the power manageable. I have a lot of fun with this and it is very capable. Buy from Li Yong-Rui systems to keep the costs down.

Hope this helps.

So I made a short trip to one of Li-Yong Rui's systems last night and bought a Vulture - stored the Cobra for now. I love it so far! I've upgraded the FSD to get back where I was faster, and gone for class 3 gimballed pulse lasers for now. I actually managed to circle a ship while staying in the blind spot the whole time, for the first time ever - it was a Type-7 so a bit slow, but I'm still proud of myself. :)

You'll love the Vulture for combat, but be badly disappointed if you need to do ANYTHING else. I would say keep the Cobra. You never know when you will need a bit of cargo space or a decent jump range.

P.S. I used one gimbled pulse and one fixed beam. You have enough power to keep the pulse firing all the time. The beam melts shields very quickly and it gives you something to fight with when your target spams chaff.

The Vulture is the quintessential pure combat ship.
Not so good for getting somewhere quickly and also not versatile for a "one-ship does it all" sort of scenario.

EXCELLENT for bounty hunting, Combat Zones and Killing anything.
My Vulture build here is made for endurance in a CZ: http://coriolis.io/outfit/vulture/24A5A4B3D5A4D3C0v0v0400-0mB22c6e242h.AwRj4tRZSA==.AwiMpSuo
So naturally it excels in PvE, melting wave after wave of NPC ships. Example: Just completed a Bulletin Board mission to smoke 40 Pirates in 3 days. I did that in one excursion without docking lasting just 1.5 hours. Fun.

This Basic build has some room for refitting to suit the mission at hand. Which is how I use mine, I examine what missions I can get and refit the modules for the mission.
Swap out the HRP for a cargo rack ( to smuggle) and/or fuel tank for larger jump range.
For Rescue missions, I swap the Docking computer module for a small Cargo rack enough for the rescued party.

The Cobra is a nice all-rounder as an occasional scoot things about ship or as a means to shuttle between the various stations you've parked your fleet of ships at so I wouldn't sell it just yet.

Here is my all-rounder Vulture fit...

It's a bit on the expensive side coming in at 23mil without any discounts. You could beef it up a little more by losing the cargo bay and disabling the hatch completely. As it is at the moment, FSD, FSD Interdictor and the fuel scoop shut down when hardpoints are deployed. It gives me just enough power to keep whatever is in my hold.

Not the most focused of builds but suits me well at the moment.
