Moving my ED Install to new OS build

Hey all,

Well, this weekend I'll likely be rebuilding my machine to W8.1 from W7 on two new SSD's. I'll be retaining the old drives as they are now, so I can copy my ED install to a new location, but it will be a fresh build.

Now, my broadband sucks and I don't want to have to re-download ED in its entirety. Can I copy my existing install folder etc. and have it work? Possibly just needing to verify it before it runs as before? I've done similar things with WoW and various Steam titles just fine, however ED is all bespoke of course.

Worse case I re-download of course, but that'll be my PC left over night most likely to do so.

Has anyone done this?

Cheers,

Scoob.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is possible. You'll have to reinstall the launcher, though. I can't remember how the game installs by default, but if the game-files are put in a folder called 'Products' in the same place that you find 'EDLaunch.exe', the launcher should be able to find them without re-downloading.

@Slawkenbergius - Yeah, I assumed I'd at least have to do that, but then prevent it from downloading the full game. Then, copy the data over and re-launch & see what happens!

@AndyB(EDB50) - I might keep my old System SSD in as well for dual boot via BIOS, we shall see. I can of course just flip back to W7 whenever I want, but would like to give W8.1 a proper go.

Hey all,

Thought I'd post a quick update on this, in case it helps anyone else.

So, I updated to W8.1 on two new SSD's in RAID0, not without niggles (8.1 specific) but far far easier than it once was, no messing about with RAID driver discs etc.

Anyway, I updated my Launcher, pointed it to the same folder (drive) ED was installed on previously (I kept the old drive in obviously!) and, after a verification email was sent to me, ED is up and running WITHOUT having to download anything other than the new launcher. Nice.

I copied over the config from my prior install, so all that is the same, as is my X52 profile. So, it all went rather smoothly.

Interestingly, W8.1 sees my old bootable W7 partition and gives me a dual-boot option automatically. My old W7 build is available at a simple click, should I have problems.

I even got Steam to play nice, wasn't entirely expecting that! lol.
