MP Private group connection issues

so me and my friend just picked up this game today and we were so excited to be able to play it with each other, so we added each other, and made a private group, BUT we cant see each other in the same game. Went to a space station and he was no were to be seen when we were both there.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Sometimes it works flawlessly for my friend and I. Today for some reason it just would not permit us to see eachother.
