Hardware & Technical MSI RX Vega 64 Upgrade (Crashing constantly on Elite)

Confirmed that the crash is not limited to only ED. Also crashing with Rocket League, and now with the new Resident Evil 2. I can run 1440p 144hz at Ultra for 1 second before hard crash, Medium Graphics for about 20 minutes before a hard crash, so on and so forth. I didn't pay for all of this high end gear to play my games on low settings.

Just bought a new 850W EVGA PSU to trouble shoot that, unfortunately I think the PSU was dead on arrival as I could not get the PC to power on. Upon putting my old PSU back in, everything powered up just fine. What a headache this is. Running Windows Memory Diagnostic now, which takes forever and is why I haven't done this yet. After this, I guess I could try one more PSU before finally giving up and just buying a motherboard and processor, I'm already 65 percent of the way to being able to build a brand new PC.

No sense in testing out the old GPU anymore, I've already been through 2 of these RX Vega's now so I think I can rule GPU out.

Yeah I did. I am now using the other two instead and it works much better. Not use if it is an issue with the sockets, but it seems all good now.

My Motherboard recommends putting both of my ram cards in slot 2 and 4. How did you switch yours up to fix your problem?

Usually first two slots are channel one, and the last two are channel two. So if you have two sticks you would ideally want to put them in slots 1 and 3 to enable dual channel functionality. It might differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it's the most common configuration I'm aware of.

Looks like my other comment wasn't approved even though it had important information in it. Anyways...

Tried a new PSU, no changes.

Running four passes of memtest86 on Card 1 right now, will run 4 passes on the other card right before going to bed. Will post back in the AM with results. Thanks for the advice thus far everyone.

OP, are you sure of your system specs - a 4970K cpu/Z97 cannot have DDR4 RAM installed.

Checking for faulty memory is a good idea and looking at your motherboard manual (page 1-25) shows a MEMOK button which you can press to check and calibrate your ram, might be worth a try if you suspect a RAM problem.

Also make sure you have all of your PSU cables connected to your motherboard, as most require extra 4 pin connector(s) (EATX 12V Connector) to the motherboard in addition to the main power connector.

Corsair make good PSU's and they are normally very reliable and your 850w unit is more than enough, but I find it unusual that your replacement was DOA - I take it that you double checked all your connections.

Good luck with your fault finding CMDR, will be interested to hear what the outcome is.

Well, for the first time in my entire life I decided to let the machines win. I ended up giving up as well as the friends who came over to help trouble shoot. Going to sell it to a friend with the older GPU in it with my older 1080p Monitor, which plays just fine with that build. I ditched AMD and Vega in particular, and went out and built a new PC.

At just over 2 grand I got the following.

Motherboard: MSI Z390 A PRO
GPU: Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060
Processor: Intel i7 6core 8700k
Ram: Gskill DDR4 3200 8GBx2=16
PSU: EVGA 750W
SSD: Samsung 500GB 860 EVO

For the monitor I went with a 32 inch curved Predator and I love it. Everything is working perfectly and I can now enjoy Elite Dangerous in glorious 1440p 144hz at Max Settings without overclocking. I am a very happy CMDR right now. Thank you everyone for trying to help, I was just losing sanity and too many hours over this issue. The PC was purchased from someone last year so maybe he pawned it off to me when he ran into the same problem. At this point the only other things to trouble shoot on the old PC is the motherboard and processor. Although who knows, maybe I got 2 bad Vega GPU's in a row. I've heard of that happening before.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out finally and thanks for updating us on the outcome :)

The new system looks great and I noted the change in GPU to the new Nvidia 2060, maybe your previous Vega GPU,s were faulty or perhaps the was some underlying compatibility issue with your old system.

Anyway the main thing is that you are up and running again and can get back to enjoying Elite.
