Multi-monitors and Oculus Rift

Good news: My Rift arrived today :D

Not-so-good-news: Ran out of ports......

OK so this is my setup:

I have 2x970's in SLI. Main monitor is plugged into the primary card's HDMI slot and the secondary monitor in the DVI slot of the card. Now the rift also needs to go into the HDMI slot......

Am I forced to plug/unplug? Is there no way to get the rift working with two monitors, ie somehow plug two HDMI cables (Rift and primary monitor) into one card HDMI slot?

sounds sketchy, the rift is a fickle foe
she needs her own dedicated hdmi.

you can find an hdmi switching device, or google 2-1 hdmi or something but im not sure how the rift will behave.
it has a mind of its own some days...

or why not plug your monitors in to the dvi or display ports instead of using hdmi??? reserve the hdmi for the rift...all others dont matter haha.

hdmi - dvi is easy.

also dual link dvi is better for monitors than hdmi.
my asus 144hz can only get 144hz from the DL dvi port, not hdmi...havent used hdmi in years since the rift.

Congrats on the rift. Can't wait to hear of your experiences. Hopefully someone on here will be able to dispense some sage words on the HDMI issue. I can't help with that myself.

It's probably also worth reading up about SLI and the Rift as I believe that we're still waiting for SLI enhanced driver support to be adopted.

Don't worry about the SLI but you will need to unplug a monitor I'm afraid.

I find you get better FPS with monitors disabled anyway

Yeah I read that as well and am planning on doing so if FPS is an issue. Problem with me is that I need to morph into the human pretzel every time I need to get to the back of my PC so avoiding the plug/unplug dance is a bonus.

I switched one of my three monitors over to displayport to get the HDMI port free for the rift.
This is on a radeon r290 though but i suppose the 970 does have 4 connectors too?

Doesn't Displayport have limitations compared to the other ports? Not sure what I mean by that, but I think I was under the impression that if you plug your monitor into displayport you can't get full HD or something like that?

I thought the industry was moving more towards display ports because if there capabilities
But I'm no expert

DisplayPort vs HDMI: Resolution, picture quality and bandwidth
DisplayPort version 1.2 can support video resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels (4K) at a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and it supports all common 3D video formats. In terms of bandwidth, it can manage 17.28 Gbps. Version 1.3, when it arrives, will support up to 8192 x 4320 (8K) resolution, or two simultaneous 4K streams. It will also double bandwidth to 32.4 Gbps.

Meanwhile, HDMI version 1.4 is the most common at the moment. This supports the same 4K resolution as DisplayPort 1.2, but at just 30 Hz (or 4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz). HDMI 2.0 is new on the scene in a few devices such as this Sony TV. This doubles the refresh rate to 60 Hz as well as increases bandwidth from 10.2- to 18 Gbps.

Displayport is more capable than current HDMI, and both go over "HD" without breathing hard.

OK, so, sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but if I have a GTX 780 with the following ports:

"One Dual Link DVI-I, One Dual Link DVI-D, One HDMI, One DisplayPort"

At the moment I have 3 Dell U2312HM monitors connected to the 2 DVI ports and the HDMI (using an HDMI to DVI adapter).

Are you saying I can get a converter and connect one of my monitors to the Displayport connector with no loss of fidelity, and then have my Rift permanently connected to HDMI?

Yes I believe so, you should be able to connect your monitor that your using the hdmi to dvi converter direct via a display port freeing up your hdmi slot

I'm sure I've even read somewhere you can daisy link display ports
