Multicannons: Gimballed vs. Turret

The description of them both say that they include signature tracking, so wondering what the difference is? I'm guessing that once the turrets are locked on, that they are locked on no matter where I'm facing? For example, if the ship is behind me. As long as they have LOS they will fire?

Gimbal means that the weapon is hung in a rotating construction, so it can move independent of the ship's orientation. Gimbal-mounted weapons can keep track of a target even when you're not pointed directly at the target, allowing far more firepower to hit a target. In exchange, gimbal weapons are usually weaker than their fixed counterparts and are vulnerable to chaff as it disrupts the weapon's ability to track the target. Also keep in mind that tracking systems track heat; if a target is not generating sufficient heat, gimbals will not lock on and behave much like fixed weapons.

Turrets are fully independent auto-firing weapons that have a 360 degree range of fire.

Turrets auto-fire and have a larger tracking arc, how they fire at can be set in the right hand window.. Fire at will, Target Only or Forward Only (iirc)
Gimbals are manual fire and a much smaller tracking arc
Turrets are less powerful than the gimbal equivalent rating / class.

Fixed are more powerful than both and come without the side effects of being unable to track when the other ship deploys a chaff.

I hate turrets, personally. Cannons just eat through expensive ammo and lasers keep overheating your ship.
Gimballed weapons are great is you fly with mouse/keyboard but are quite weak.

Fixed all the way! They have a small amount of auto-aim, too and are badass. :)
