The Old Multiplayer Connection help thread links to the Newcomers forum, but here there is no "New Multiplayer Connection help" thread. Some of the advice in that old thread is still valid (such as port forwarding I d imagine).
Can we have it stickied back in this forum please?
EDIT: In the mean time, if you guys have connectivity issues, i.e. cant send text messages to friends, or connect with voice in game, or cant see each other or other PC or NPC in the same instance then you can try some or all of the following:
Multiplayer connection help
The quickest way to ascertain if your "peer to peer" conexion to a friend is good, even if you are in far away systems is to attempt a voice chat in game. If you can talk then it most likely mean that both of you will be able to see each other in instances etc.
A – Firewall
Go into your firewall settings and allow Elite´s executable to communicate through Windows Firewall both for private and public networks.
Elite´s exe tends to be by default here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1001\EliteDangerous32.exe
B – Antivirus
Similarly go into your antivirus settings so it also allows your Elite exe to communicate through. Worst comes to the worst try deactivating your antivirus completely and see if that works so to rule it out.
If you still have connecitivity issues even after ensuring Firewall and AV allow Elite to communicate the I suggest you attempt a port forwarding:
C – Port Forwarding
For those of you who have never tried port forwarding there are a large number of sites out there that show you how to do it by router brand and model. The key is that you will have to create a static IP local address for your PC. You then will forward an UDP port from your router to that address. The guides are quite straight forward. this one is a classic: www.portforward.com . And here is the specific guide for port forwarding with Elite: Dangerous: http://portforward.com/help/elite-dangerous/.
Once you know how to forward ports and how to create a static IP address then follow these instructions:
1) Select an available UDP port, e.g. UDP/5100
2) Configure 'Port Forwarding' on your router so that your chosen UDP port is forwarded to your computer's local static IP address
3) Locate your game installation, by default it installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\, but it might be different on your computer
4) Edit AppConfig.xml in Notepad and make the following changes:
5) Change Port="0" to your chosen UDP port, e.g. Port="5100"
6) Change UpnpEnabled="1" to UpnpEnabled="0"
Every time there is a game client update the AppConfig.xml file will be reset so you ll need to edit after every patch.
(Note: Some routers do not really need a static local IP address because they can identify individually all the devices connected in your network. If this is the case tehn make sure the UDP address you chose is forwarded to your PC as appropriate in your router portforward settings.
The above tips are not an exact science and there may very well not work at all, so if you have corrections or additions to it please post away and I ll incorporate.
Godspeed!
