multiple character starter locations

So I pledged for Elite as soon as I heard it was back after playing it all those years ago as a kid when I was so young I had to get my older brother to dock in a space station for me!

This is the first chance I have had to look around and I am thinking of upping my pledge but cant find the info I would like to know after about 20 mins or so searching. Apologies if it has been answered.

I read that alpha was scheduled for dec/jan this year is this still the case?

Also I read that I can make multiple pilots from the wiki page, will each character be able to specify its starting ship?

eg:

Pilot 1: wants to be the the law abiding trader/explorer so starts off with a Cobra Mk 3, Explorer.

Pilot 2: wants to be a bounty hunter and maybe do some shady dealings so start off with the Eagle Mk 2 Imperial Bounty Hunter package.

will this be possible? or is it once I have chosen a ship for my main do I then start off pilot 2 with the default ship and load out unable to chose?

Thanks for any help

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you go to the backers login page here.

https://elite.frontier.co.uk/backers/login/

You can then upgrade your pledge to whatever level you want.

Yes the Alpha should hit in December this year.

You can read the latest developments in the most recent newsletter here.

I'm sure there is some mechanics for multiple Pilots, I'm just looking for a link that can give you some more info.

ok thats great about the upgrade just add difference in price so nice and easy.

Hopefully someone will have the answer about the characters soon.

I am usually a one character type person but I remember what fun it was to be more of a law on to ones self, would be fun to be able to do this on one character who doesn't mind too much about space station sending out squads of vipers after me like in the old days, whilst the other could be law abiding citizen.

Hence why I would like one nice mild mannered explorer/trader and one nasty smuggler type.

The pledge says you have a choice of:

a:Explorer: Have the option to start on the edge of explored space with a long range version of the Cobra Mk III and 3,000 CR (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons).

or

b:Pirate: Have the option to start in an anarchic Frontier system with a stolen but upgraded Cobra Mk III and only 100 CR (randomised system choice for multiplayer reasons).

So could I start one character off with the first option and be the explorer and the second character other with the pirate option?

Was hoping to find it on here http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous_Wiki which is where I found out about the multiple characters but it doesn't tell me if the second character slot will also be able to choose its starting location and ship that are within my pledge tier.

If it is possible I will just pledge more on one account which would make things easier.

Just a guess here, but its my understanding there are no characters. You just play yourself.

I suppose you could play the bad guy then reset your account and start over and be a trader etc?

The starting options are just like a saved game that begin slightly along the path to that profession. You can still get pretty much the same effect by starting with the default option, but it would take a bit longer to get to the point where you have the long-range Eagle, or whatever. Also, it should be perfectly possible to start with the pirate option, and end up playing as a bounty hunter/explorer/miner/etc. with a chequered past if you wanted to.

I think the different options are best thought of as something to take the drudge out of starting a new character from scratch. My intention is probably to have my first character as one that I start from scratch with the basic position, and then later on I'll probably start a second game as a Founder, and later down the line I'll run a third character in Ironman. I believe there will be three slots per account, so that would be my lot.

You can play multiple characters ( number to be decided, but I think Michael said it will be at least 3) But you can only log in as one character, per account at any one time.

Thank for replies.

yeah I didn't think it made sense to for you to buy an option with multiple start points available and then make you chose only one.

I know the characters are dynamic and can start out as one thing and end up completely different like the original in that respect where you could build back you law abiding status after an incident with the law.

I was just hoping I could use the option to start 2 characters, having a law abiding one for when I want to relax, and a nasty one for some semi-indiscriminate killing, and drug and gun running.

Would be nice to have the option to start them both out with half decent ships rather than both from scratch as I can be quite limited in time.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure we've been told three. The only reason I can see Frontier putting limitations on how you use the starting options is if people exploit them as a credit source. Start new game/transfer credits to alt/delete game/rinse/repeat.....

Do these start positions include those that were part of the Kickstarter? If so then there are several, and it does specifically mention that these are start positions.

Imperial Bounty Hunter
Federal Trader
Pirate
Independant Trader
Explorer
Founder World start

@Memnoch I think they do, I have listed all those options available to either upgrade to or as part of my current package, it does say however that the system you start in is randomised so we dont all start out together and get in each others way.

Reason why I asked if I can have one game copy with one character starting as Exlorer and one as Pirate as if I can only have one character on this account with the pledge benefits and all the others start at usual retail start level, I will just make another whole new account rather than just upping the pledge level of this one :)

That or to sell you more slots as a microtransaction...

With two different accounts, and if you have two computers, you can play two characters at the same time, give you an appointment to yourself in a specific place, and why not, form a group with you and you

:D

I have assumed you can use the pledge start options for each new character

That actually sounds like a good, non-aggressive way to monetise. Given that Frontier would be covering themselves by providing one slot for online play, three slots seems reasonably generous to me - especially as it means that three people can effectively share an account if they're also sharing a computer (thinking families here). Any more than three is more a convenience than a necessity, and charging per slot would be less aggressive than making people buy a whole new copy. That would be especially true when you start to factor in add-ons.

Is this just speculation? or is it official?

I would love to have 3 characters.

- Trader (reserved playing)
- Bounty hunter/explorer (not worry about money)
- Pirate (causing havoc)

But I have a feeling that it's simply one account, one player/character sadly.
