Multiple Control profiles

Elite has a huge system to tweak the controls for your device. Whatever your device is.

Still it has a huge flaw which is just ... unbelievable. I have searched forums here and on steam and they all confirm it.

If I want to play ED at my computer with mouse/keyboard setup and then at my TV with steam link and steam controller then I must be a mutant and possibly should be burned.
There is no support whatsoever for switching/saving your own control schemes. Zilch.

Problems are:

1) I can choose one of the predefined profiles - any changes to that will create a new "custom" profile which will override the previous "custom" profile. I loose the customer profile.

2) launching the game on a computer that is missing the controller will again silently override the "custom" profile and remove any controller settings.

3) manually coping and renaming the "custom" file as a new file has same problem as point 3. If I load it , automatically when starting game , and I have no controller connected - controller settings get wiped.

4) If I copy , rename the "custom" file and then lock it as not writable by elite I can make it all work ... kind of. I can make new bindings as they go into custom but ... then they are lost as custom gets overwritten any chance the game has.

The whole idea of recognising a device via USB ID and then wiping profile if the USB device is not present is just unbelievable fall of design.

Please there is so many searches and questions I see on the net - there is a group that would like to have this ability to switch between different custom profiles.

Is there any chance Frontier will do that?

I do this all the time - you can have as many customised "binds" files as you like, you can change them on the fly in-game, you can plug in different controllers and switch to that controller's binds file - (not done automatically I agree). I have currently set-ups for trading, exploring, sight-seeing and (occasionally) combat - the first three change some key functions on my HOTAS and MFDs, the combat one uses a different joystick (same throttle) - I just have to plug in the joystick and then select the profile in E D.

If you are having trouble making different control files you can search for threads about it. The main things to remember are that E D uses the name in line 2 of the file to identify it - so you have to change that, and E D gets confused if you have backups in the same directory (the main cause of the "I can't save my binds" threads).

I do think that F D could (and should) improve the mechanism, it is not very user-friendly - but it does work.
