Multiple Shield Generators...?

How would you feel about being allowed to install multiple Shield Generators?
Of course, you'd only be able to have one powered up at a time.

It's something I've wondered since i started playing, but never really bothered to ask about it.

But with the torpedo special effect that cripples shield generators, i thought it'd be handy to have a back up on standby to bring online. You'd still have to wait for it to cycle up and charge, but once it's up, assuming you didn't die, you could go about repairing you main shield generator.

Other uses could be having a low power shield for bumps and scrapes, keeping you running cooler, and a main shield for combat, assuming you're not caught of guard.

Thoughts?

Interesting idea and certainly "realistic" enough if folks wanted to take up internals for another shield generator...or two...why not?
That's me as a Solo player speaking.

Knowing the nature of people and Open there would probably be a dozen threads here a day about "multiple shield generator exploits are killing Open."

This would also give something else to do for the Engineer role in multicrew.
...uh, wait, there is no engineer role in multicrew. nevermind. :rolleyes:
 
This was discussed in the original Kickstarter dev updates. As we have a single genny today, I think we know the way things went.

I wouldn't count on it.

I think the big ships should have backup generators. Or front & back generators. For example you could put more shield power at the front end.
Could be interesting.
 
I suspect that the directional shield idea got dropped as soon as they realised the flaw. As soon as you have more than one hostile it's a potential liability.

Yeah, can't have the player making interesting decisions about directing energy where it's most needed. I guess that's why the removed the Power distributer moving enery bettween shields engines and weapons.
 
It would be pretty strong to have a reinforced prismatic shield onboard, and then switch over to a resistance modded biweave when the primary failed.
 
Yes, I think an extra generator would be a good idea. Either something you could run in parallel or as a fall-back if the first fails. This seems a pretty obvious thing to do in reality and it adds some options in game. You could argue this is partially what shield boosters do, provide an extra shield generator like element - but why not a module? Hmm..

And yes, on other types of components being able to double up, extra power plant and perhaps capacitors and so on. You could make the non-dedicated modules less effective or something.
 
Interesting idea, but think of the balancing, the screams on the forums, the rage quitting, the "I'm Leaving threads" the new "ganker" threads, All the kicked dogs, cats and wives. Think of the BNP, the EU and the Orange One.
