Multiple-Ship Ownership and Home systems

I posted this advice on another thread but thought it might be useful in general: Feel free to add your own opinions and perhaps advice on good systems for buying and storing ships or good combos for pairs of ships at different budgets?.. anyway here it is:

Home System -

- It is a good idea to pick a home system where you store your ships of the future (ideally one with a large technology based economy) the reason is this system will sell lots of different ships and have many modules available for you to outfit them with. the last thing you want as a home system is a farming planet where the only thing you can buy is a crop harvester attached to a Type 6.

- If you are stuck for ideas I would suggest going to Li Yong Rui space and searching for a system there as you get 15% off any ships and modules you buy there. This will also reduce your rebuy costs by 15% if you die too.... handy!

New ship purchase advice -

- when you buy a new ship I try not to sell the original as you will lose 10% of the value of what you sell... However you can sell all the modules and weapons, reduce the power plant, FSD to their cheapest and smallest E class variants leaving only a shell. This means you can still re-fit your old ship later without losing any of your hard earned credits!

WARNING -
Once you have reduced your power-plant to a small E class DO NOT LAUNCH or you may not be able to even power up your thrusters. This will result in you getting killed by the station for loitering, you have been warned !

- You can buy and sell modules and swap them between ships without losing any credits. For example; if you dont have enough money to have a MkiV Cobra and a Fer-de-Lance (you cant fly both at once anyway)... when your not Bounty hunting in your FDL you strip out the parts and use the money to refit your Cobra to do missions. or Vice Versa. This will allow you to use multiple ships without having to have them both outfitted all the time. Cash Recycling basically!I hope thats useful (generally selling ships should be a last resort unless its a cheap ship anyway and you dont care if you lose 10% of its value) -

NEVER NEVER NEVER sell a ship without removing all the modules first or you will lose 10% of all the value of your modules as well!

I hope thats useful advice for all venturing into the world of Multi-Ship ownership - I find one is never enough....... just ask my hareem of ladies on Lave station!

I think it's essential to own at least 2 ships.
It's also important to never fly a ship you can't afford to lose!

My advice when upgrading your ship, is don't trade in your old one!
Reason 1: chances are, your new ship will be pushing your cash reserves to the limit. Dying in your hard earned Python, or FDL or whatever, and not being able to rebuy it, will set you back to a sidewinder.
Reason 2: You may actually hate the new ship you just purchased.
Reason 3: If you're cash is running below what's comfortable to rebuy (I always keep money for 2 rebuys in the bank), then you can hop in your old ship and earn some decent credits, without risking the huge rebuy cost of a larger ship.

NEVER Fly a ship you can't afford to rebuy. Ever.
Not even if you're in solo, in an empty system. And just wanna take it for a spin?
Just don't!
That will be the 1 time you get stuck in the letter box, panic, boost in to a fed ship, kill it, become wanted, attempt to flee, and then get interdicted by 17 Anaconda's.

You speak the truth.
The one time I've flown my Anaconda without adequate insurance (long story, no choice, sequence of events etc) I immediately was interdicted by an Elite Anaconda which got me down to 15% hull before I got away.
I never ever SEE Elite Anacondas when I WANT to see them (combat) and I hadn't been interdicted by ANY Anaconda, ever, before. Methinks the game is sneaky ...
I survived and have long since had double my required insurance and cargo value as a default.

I always fly with 2 times the insurance cost of my most expensive ship (Armed Trade Condy), plus 6 million in capital to afford to fill her with slaves. If she's blown up, I'll keep flying her.

Always check if the Hi-Tech system you want to call home actually has a decent amount of modules in store, my home-base usually has no A-rated shield boosters in stock. Also, don't discount Industrial systems as a home base, I was able to fully upgrade my Vulture at one.

I'm just getting ready to move home system, I'm in a high-tech ATM, but I'm going to move to another high-tech with a larger population as the missions on the BB seem to be greater in number and diversity....
I don't bounty hunt in my home system... ever. Too many things to go wrong....
Moving home though.... with three ships.... <sigh>

yes i remember something similar when i first upgraded... who knows what scripts frontier have hidden deep deep down in the depths of the Elite code. Better safe than sorry for sure.

I like to use my corvette for short range trading (yes I know a cutter is better, but I dont have the money for both or any imp rank). I leave that ship stored at a trade route I know with less than 10lys between the two systems, and fly out to it with a stripped down type 6 no cargo its litterally just a FSD attached to a powerplant. no other modules, its nice and light and can take me across populated space in 6 jumps. I use that to get back and forth between my home system and my trade system. It would be similar if you have a Type 9 for example. you dont want to be moving that a long distance so a personal transport ship is useful!

haha all good advice sir, any tips on your favourite combination of ships?

Yep, all good advices +rep

But one must remember - multiple ship ownership has a price - moving them around, waste of time - this is so painful.....

No1 development I'd like to see ingame is the ability to pay for bringing my ships to desired location, it can take time, cost credits but possibility to do that is a single most important change that would vastly improve the experience IMHO.

Not really. Lol I don't mine or trade.
But I have my A rated FDL for bounty hunting, and an A rated DBS with a 22ly jump range for moving about and smuggling, which I rarely do.
If you have the money I guess a good combo is an FDL and Python.

Yeah id like to see that, but i do like having to use a transport ship as well to get around, otherwise I would probably never use the smaller ships!
