Newcomer / Intro Multiple SRV's

Is it a good idea to have 2 as a newbie? I know it affects range but restocking would be a pain as I would have to go and dock?

I've only ever used one. However, two can be good if you think you're going to get destroyed in one way or another. However, even if you run into trouble and get warnings such as hull being compromised or you've run out of fuel/ammo, don''t forget you can synthesise a lot of things.

On geo planets, don't run over gushing geysers - you will be launched spaceward and may end up dead on your return to terra firma.

Alec is definitely the wrong person to ask that 😁.
Seriously - it depends on what you want to do. If you only need it to carefully replenish Jumponium materials, and in general can't stand SRV driving (like me - the SRV in VR makes me ), one SRV is enough for a galactic circumnavigation. If, on the other hand, you enjoy racing your SRV across bumpy plains, or down at 10 km high cliff, or try to drive it into orbit, or race it around a ground base, or drive it around (yes, fully around) a moon, then you'll need a big ship to store them all.

I spend a LOT of time in the SRV so I generally fly with 2 'cos it can be a pain to have to fly back to a station to get another one. That said, if you're just material gathering and you're careful then you shouldn't really be destroying SRVs (it's only when you start base jumping or tackling Guardian sites that it get tricky). But then again, as someone new to this ... you may well lose an SRV while practicing stuff and having a spare will be useful. Sorry - hard to give specific advice, it's kinda up to you.

😂
I get through a lot of SRVs!

Personally I've only ever needed more than one SRV when I was doing Guardian ruins.
That was before I learned the trick where you park your ship really close to the ruin so your PDTs can shoot down the rockets Guardians are shooting at you. :D

I do tend to put C4 hangar on my exploration ships when I'm planning to be outside longer in a bigger ship, but firstly, I've never actually needed it - I always got myself out of all trouble I've encountered, particuarly deep canyons and rough terrains the ship can't land in, and secondly, nowadays I mostly explore in DBX so C4 hangar is out of the equation anyway.

Plus I think having a spare SRV is detremental to fun, out there. If I don't have one, I have to think where I'm going. One time, I've spent almost whole two days in a canyon I've jumped into and couldn't get out of and which was too rough and narrow for my ship. I ended up driving about 60 km through it until it opened up enough for me to get out and start looking for a landing spot for my ship.
If I had a spare SRV, I'd be tempted to simply self-destruct and get on with things. But this way I had to fight my way out of the situation and it felt awesome. :)

Though sometimes I go out exploring in my Cutter and then I make a proper mothership out of her. Big SRV hangar with a lot of SRVs, big SLF hangar and two SLFs (imperial and guardian, usually because they're most fun) and I go crazy. Racing around, smacking stuff up,... :)

I only had two SRVs onboard when I went to one of those Guardian sites. There are those Guardian skimmers shooting missiles and I felt like I want spare SRV just in case. Otherwise one SRV is perfectly enough. If it gets damaged your hangar will repair it. I crossed entire galaxy from end to end and one SRV lasted for the entire trip with no issues. Don't bother with second SRV unless you going to engage in some warfare on the surface of the planet.

Note base jumping, racing and suborbital flights can count as warfare. Just check Alec’s record.

I used to use two SRVs a lot when I started planetary work but that was mainly down to a lack of skill and confidence that I could find and synthesise fuel and ammo having a second let me have twice as long befor heading to a station.
