I own a Corvette and most recently an Anaconda, the Corvette runs a class 7 bi-weave and 4 boosters resulting in 1029 MJ raw shield strength with mods this equates to 4153 MJ thermal, 2980 MJ kinetic and 3129 MJ explosive, the only time that this has dropped was after being interdicted by a elite FDL then three mission related dangerous level Anacondas dropped into the instance one after the other, I lost about 20% hull and picked up 600k in bounties.

The Anaconda is set up as a long range armed trader and runs a class 6 bi-weave with 715 MJ raw shield strength with mods this equates to 2974 MJ thermal, 2329 MJ kinetic and 2176 MJ explosive, I haven't had as serious a combat situation as the Corvette but it seems to handle most high level ships fine.

In coriolis a Cutter with class 6 bi-weave + 4 x 0A boosters has 464 MJ a lot less than the Anaconda with the same set up if it were me I'd be fitting a class 8 bi-weave and 4 boosters, the problem with a class 6 shield is that has less than 50% of the ship's optimal hull mass so even with 8 boosters the shield still going to be weaker than an Anaconda with 4 boosters simply because of it's much lower hull mass.
I use a mix of thermal, kinetic and resist aug boosters to "tune" the shield resistances because most NPC attacks are laser based (with some rails and PA) so high thermal resistances are more effective, the four PD are hugh fun to watch when an enemy fires off some missiles
