Music for explorers

This is my playlist for when I'm out exploring:

Though to be fair, I use the same playslist a lot. Many of the tunes do double duty as combat tunes as well.

Here are a few of my current favourites.

I love this one. It sounds like it'd be an awesome anthem for WH40K's Imperial Guard:

Then there's this very very awesome one from Mark Russell. Not very explore-y, but again quite awesome. It was even used in a game trailer to devastating effect!

Of course since I'm out in the black for such a long time, I prefer to listen to podcasts or the occasional short fiction. Here are a couple I like, one is easy background noise, one is hysterically funny.

Summary: I spend a lot of time out in the black. What I'm listening to at the time, well, it's whatever I'm listening to at the time!

I'm still 22KLy from home and currently listening to Jean Michelle Jarre for example.

EDIT: Having listened to the rather awesome Mark Russell tune again and now being sufficiently "in the mood" I spose I'd better share the rather spectacular awesome trailer it came from :).

(As an aside, the game advertised in the trailer was... not disappointing, as such, but not spectacular.
It is effectively a beta for the sequel, which releases later this year.)
Still, awesome trailer, huh??

Must say, the tracks from the Dune games are pretty sweet. I still have Emperor installed and on the rare occasion fire it up to play.

I tend to play random stuff when i am allowed to have music playing from all eras of many different styles.

However, my favourite space related track has to be Apocalypse from BGS.

Since it hasn't been mentioned above:

Some of the longer mixes from these guys. The space ambient and quite a bit of the other stuff isn't emo, and matches well the tone of the guardian ruins, fits the isolation of space theme elite does well also.

On a brighter note, this would be the grand anthem for explorers. Yes i know its a bit different, but if you listen to the lyrics and the tone it matches exploration in elite perfectly. I've always daydreamed someone should remix this video with scenes from elite instead, would match.

I like atmospheric black metal.

Believe me, it's the perfect backing track to those epic trips through the darkness of space.

I have a 900-strong playlist on Spotify.

You could also go with songs which specifically mention space objects.

Hawkwind- space is deep ..... seriously give them a listen. They have been around since the 60s and still touring. They are highly underrated and have been very influential to alot of music scenes and artists. Plus Lemmy used to be a member so you can't go wrong :) Slayer is also good when ridding the void of imperial scum ;)

"Space is dark, it is so endless
When you're lost it's so relentless
It is so big, it is so small
Why does man try to act so tall?

Is this the reason deep in our minds?

It does not feel, it does not die
Space is neither truth nor lies
Into the void we have to travel
To find a clue which will unravel

Is this the reason deep in our minds?

The secret lies with our tomorrow
In each of us is a hidden sorrow
Path goes onwards through the night
Beyond the realms of ancient light

Is this the reason deep in our minds? "

What?
That's quite enough already.
Sorry.

Not underrated round here!
Saw them many times at their peak in the seventies and last year as well, although Dave Brock is the only original member left.
Their music is more rocky these days.

Hi everyone, this is my first post but I’ve been reading the forums for a while now. Some great stuff on here i’ll Have to check out! I’m always on the lookout for new music and love to check out new stuff whilst exploring in Elite. I’m currently making the trip back from the Heart and Soul Nebulas so have plenty of time to check out the music in this thread. I’ve also just finished writing a track inspired by my time Playing Elite, i just need to finish mixing and mastering it. I really love the sound design in this game, the people who do it have it spot on. Anyway, I have set up a playlist on Soundcloud of some stuff I like to listen to whilst playing.

On another forum I was pointed in the direction of Pertubator - sorry no You Tube links as posting from a restricted PC.

Google or YT search should pick up though.

Essentially synthwave but the guy seems to weave in sci-fi elements and I might even have picked up a bit of electric guitar. Not a huge fan of mindless trance (more of a prog rocker) but this is actually very good particularly when repeat jumping or driving the SRV full pelt over planet surface.

I like my 20th century avant-garde composers when playing Elite: Morton Feldman, Luigi Nono, Toru Takemitsu, Messiaen, Ligeti:

Autechre's more ambient stuff works for me as well.

This is likely to change when Exploration gets its much needed and long overdue massive overhaul and I don't just want to die every time I'm more than 50 jumps out.

Yeah Purtobator is cool. First heard him on the BeyondSynth podcast (Synthwave podcast). If you like that sorta stuff check out the Turbo Kid soundtrack by Le Matos as it’s got some excellent tunes on :)

I tend to often not listen to anything other than the game itself, meaning the ship noises and system map planet sounds and such, usually with noise cancelling headphones on for more clarity too. I even normally fly with the in game music turned off, not because I don't like the music (I do), but rather because I tend to prefer a lack of music when I'm out in deep space.

That said though, sometimes I'll listen to stuff on my pad next to me while I'm out exploring. Podcasts or Youtube videos, or even music sometimes too. When I DO listen to music while exploring, I often find myself picking my Two Steps From Hell channel on Pandora, with songs like:
