Hardware & Technical My ~10 year old Hiper 580W PSU exploded :(

Have a 650W corsair gold unit in the post now.

I dont have any spare to test my PC. Anyone any idea of the probability that other parts of my PC will be fried?

the psu rattles so I am guessing a capacitor blew. There were 2 (I think) bangs in quick succession. I hope this does not mean 2 caps went. I am hoping that other capacitors were able to soften the blow and the pc shut off before terminal damage to the rest of the pc.

fingers crossed. :(

Has anyone else had a PSU blow, and if so, did you get away without any other damage or did you lose components?

I've had a PSU go bang on me, it didn't kill anything else. I'm not sure if I was lucky, or if they're designed to not surge the stuff attached to it.

If you get no sign of life with you power it on, there's a good chance the PSU is dead, so replace that first and cross your fingers ;)

I've never popped a psu, but I've fixed many that have! The potential for catastrophic damage is there, but it's also possible that everything else is fine.

I've seen motherboards with traces vapourised, split chip casings, burned connectors and cap shrapnel put dents in cases.

I hope you'll be up and running after a simple psu swap!

It always pays to get the best psu you can afford that meets your requirements, keep it under rated load, and blow the dust out now and then.

thanks for your thoughts.... .yeah I did all the above with my hiper - indeed it did last 10 years so - as long it didnt take anything out with it when it went - I cant really knock the psu. It has done me well.

Mine was the non modular version

(there was a major design issue with the modular version of this PSU, indeed everyone I know (and there are a few) who had one either had it fail, or got rid before it did.) I dont *think* they lost hardware when theirs blew but I am not sure.

blew a psu with no side effects once

A while back I had a period of work overseas and it was the type of ATX with a slider switch to select 115V US mains. On returning to Europe, plugged it in, and I was too busy gossiping with the IT guy to switch it back to 220V. BANG smoke instant failure. I asked him nicely if he'd swap in a new ATX, which he did, and after that it worked normally.

In summary there are ways to blow only the power supply which might not fry the rest of your PC. See how you get on when the post arrives.

Glad to hear you are back up and running!

Have to say though, you were quite lucky everything else was unscathed, that psu safety worked :)
