My 1st go at mining in 1.3......... (TLDR - its fun :) )

So I was getting a little burned out of trading and pirate killing missions so decided it was time for a change of pace....... so it was either exploration or mining.

I should have gone for exploration as I do not have much money for respeccing and I already have an explorer asp,........ so obviously I chose mining! :D

So now I have a decked out mining python. A lot of 1sts for me as not only have I never used drones, I also have never used turreted weapons and indeed have never shot anything in my python (I have not had it long and just been trading in it untill now).

by the end of it I had a million credits left, with an insurance rebuy of just shy of 4 million.... Again, I should have parked it up and gone out in another ship to get some money in... but no, He who dares and all that! ;)

So off I flew. I did not want to go too far on my 1st go as was finding the ropes so went to leesti (in mobius! with no insurance I aint going near open right now!!!).

So I arrived, and realised I had no ammo for my drones (quick google and i learn that limpets are not ammo and are cargo, which is bought from the munitions "shop" (at this point I was very glad I did not head off into the deep without any practice)

So back i go, get geared up, and then back again to the ring..... where i get attacked.... arm weapons, and my entire ship shuts down.... AGH!!!! I forgot to balance my power after converting from my trade ship.
Power back on I ran away to supercruise and gathered myself. (luckily, knowing i sometimes make mistakes, I ALWAYS have my shields at higher priority than other stuff, so even tho i lost engines, life support and weapons, my shields stayed up!)

power balanced and back again...... 3rd time lucky I hoped...........

And it was!. The mining at leesti is terrible and I do not reccomend it at all but it allowed me to find the ropes. I am not sure i will bother wasting limpets on prospectors in future but they work ok, but the collectors are fantastic and really speed things up..... whilst it maybe wont rival trading, I imagine if I get in a good mining site with 30% chunks of decent metals I think it will bring in enough money to be worth while.

Also my 2 class 3 turreted burst lasers took care of a few cobras etc that decided to attack me. I did not even need to halt mining. In truth I am not sure the python is the best ship for this. I may respec my asp for this job and then get a diamond back explorer to go exploring (to be honest in truth, for PvE the asp really can be the catch all ship of elite dangerous for everything outside of heavy trading but my mission is to have every ship in the game, each one specced out for its own role.

but as i said, if you got this far... in short, mining is quite enjoyable now imo, and whilst long term I hope we get even more too it, such as depositing mining machines on the larger asteroids and then collecting them like a fisherman collecting lobster pots, but for now, its well worth a look imo, esp if you tried it in 1.0 and decided it was not for you.

I was considering turning my python into a miner so i can get rid of the penniless rank. Could you teach me the ways? and give me your loadout. Please :)

lol if anything my story should have told you it is, I did not really have a clue ;)

however i will edit this post tonight with a shipyard link to my ship. but right now i need to do some work.

but big thing for me is you buy the limpets frm the munitions tab, they are not bought by rearming.
and ideally in a ship like the python you want a controller which can control at least 3 collector limpets.....and you want them to last as long as possible... i think iirc the controller i am using is a class 4A one.
and you probably in a python want at least 50 limpets (a bit of a guess i am new to it myself).

and make sure you are armed.... you need to be able to defend yourself (turreted class 3 burst lasers seem to do the job set to auto fire, and i use 2x class 2 mining lasers for mining.

indeed... and if I had a piece of feedback to give the devs, it would be not having the drones on a fire group either.

we can assign a key to chaff, heat sinks etc so why not limpets? I was surprised this was the case to be honest, (unless i missed the keybindings in the options)

but it would be cool if I could assign "deploy collector drone" and "deploy prospector drone" to my voice attack.

I DO get why the turrets need to be assigned to a fire group, becasue they ARE weapons, and i think it is a desgin choice to force us to assign all weapons to groups, but if the drones were keybindable then you may find your turret issue would be fixed as you would have 2 free slots for your weapons then

Type 7 actually carries less than the python does if you were to ditch the shield gen

the T7 is a truckload cheaper tho!. 4 million rebuy cost on my python is a lot to risk, and it has cost an insane amount of scratch to kit her out.

I have just up graded from a t7 to a python. The t7 was too weak to deal with pirates so I had to hide and run when they found me.

The python is much better! 3 burst lazer turrets and 2 c2 mining. I have 2 c3 limpet controlers that give me 4 drones. I strip the ore from the roid in about 5 seconds, buy witch point my lipets are comong back with there first trip, I make them w8 if im not quite done stripping the ore...

then I go to the refinery and sit there for 10 to 15 seconds organising the hopper.. I use a c4b refinery and just take everything from galite and up. Then once my hold is full if I have time I scrape my limpets off on a roid and dump all my galite if I have over 20.. this frees up some more room for metals that are worth it and saves time venting. I usualy bring 45 limpets and have 192 cargo. I make about 2m in 1.5 hours depending on my luck and how tough the pirates are... or if it gets dark at the extraction site as this realy slows me down.

I sold my t7 for 25mil and I had 50mil saved and my setup to begin with cost 65mill and now 74mill... but I now own a python and im making money and no boring trade runs!

I did some Anaconda mining to get it out of my system.

I was left with 320t of cargo after outfitting, loaded 90 limpets and went to a pristine metallic ring around Antal. Mined until I had 320 + 10 t of metals and painite, discarded all else, including all remaining limpets and some cargo from hapless pirates.

Made 4-5 mil for 5-6 hours of hard work. Fun, but I won't do that again any time soon.

I will convert my Python to a miner for a change of pace at some point, just a bit too broke for the turrets right now. Mining can indeed be very Zen like in the beautiful rings.

(2) Having to assign the turrets to a fire group is a pain in the behind. I liked being able to say to them "Fire at Will"(3) and they would happily sit there blasting away at anything and everything.

You can change to it. Press 4 in cockpit, go to the last tab and change "turret mode" to fire at will. ;)

I'm currently doing the exploring CG but when I get back I'm getting a combat/mining Asp set up. Had great fun in the beta and hey, I don't give a monkees about cred/ph.

So yeah, much fun in the right places :)

I like this thread, there's so much in the OP's post that would normally feature it's own special rage-quit thread.

Well done for making me laugh, accepting your comedy errors were your own and inspiring me to try my hand at mining again+1 rep.
