My 1st post - and possibly a dumb one :)

Hi all

LOVING the look of this game and I am considering buying it as I am currently building a driving / flying cockpit simulator at home - but I have some questions .......I have spent a bit of time looking for answers before posting these up but to no avail.

1) If I buy into the current 50quid BETA , install it and then only play as SINGLE PLAYER offline - do I get some way of accessing the new updates and builds as they are created in the game, in other words will the new parts of the game be 'continually downloadable' so I could then update my version and play SPOFFLINE but continually access the new parts ( boy I hope I am making sense  ). The reason I ask this is because we currently have a very slow internet connection ( 150kb per second ) and I am unsure if I can play online at that rate? So if I CANT play smoothly online and ALSO cant access a lot of the game/universe itself OFFLINE - then I have to reconsider buying it.

We have an incredibly fast broadband network due past our house mid next year - but until then we are fairly slow. My son can play C.O.D online quite smoothly if that is an indication of how ED may run for us??

2) Is there a lot of 'dog-fight' action already in the game as I am MAINLY interested in that aspect. I look at the videos and mainly see the same flight/fight stuff all the time ( maybe I am looking in the wrong places ?)

Apologies in advance if these seem like dumb questions - clearly I am a complete noob to ED. Thanks in advance :D

1) There is no single player offline. (not yet anyway, unless you count the limited training missions.) It's single player ONLINE. You are in the same universe as all the other players, you just don't see them. You are online so that your universe can update along with everyone else's. Mainly for market data.

You will have a game launcher, like everyone else, that will keep your game up to date.

2) There are conflict zones that you can fly to in order to get plenty of combat. The most popular being the "Federal Distress Signal" near Eranin 2.

You can also fly to Nav Beacons where ships routinely jump in from other systems. There you can pirate or bounty hunt. My favorite thing to do is pirate the pirates. I take cargo from wanted haulers and smuggle it into Chango Dock :)

Single Player offline isn't an option right now. You have to be connected. I'm really not sure what to tell you about your connection. However, if you're able to play C.O.D. rather smoothly, I would assume you would be alright.

There's lots of fighting possible, it's up to you if you want to take advantage of it. Some people find the A.I. challenging, others find them to be pushovers.

PvP happens, but it can be a bit of a challenge to find if you don't set it up in advance. (or you can target people who aren't necessarily asking for it... Yar!)

unfortunately right now there is no real single player offline so with a limited internet connection i would say its not really worth you spending the extra £15 to jump in right away, the game currently has a large overhead of debug info and so does take up quite a bit of bandwidth, it may be ok but fair warning and all that. this is the same for solo mode only not quite as bad as Open (PvP mode) as it stands the only real offline part of the game are the single player combat missions that were created as the first Alpha to test the flight model and combat mechanics.

the combat build has 9 or 10 scenarios of increasing difficulty, you may find this is enough for now if the overhead is too great to play the main game.

there are parts of the play area that are dedicated to dogfighting combat, you may have heard of the battle at the federal distress signal near Eranin 2 - jump in, pick your side then blast away! loads of fun.

you can also do things like bounty hunting or piracy at the navigation beacons found in most systems but you have to take care as the cops often show up. if you are pirating cargo you may have to run.

the other thing to watch for is if you are dogfighting as a bounty hunter and going after ships with a wanted status they often fly close to other 'clean' ships. hit one of these and you get a bounty on you head and the cops will again start attacking you.

hope that lot makes sense, its 4am here and i'm a little blury eyed after a long night of playing

Thanks all for confirming a few things- I think I will wait until the game is done:(

It just looks so bloody good that it makes me want to grab it now dammit

AndyB thanks for the early AM detailed reply mate
Appreciated

Your patience will be rewarded :)

It's good practice to wait until a game is released and see some full reviews before spending money on a game.

Having said that, I jumped on Elite: Dangerous before there was even an alpha :D

The universe is not properly dynamic right now (other than the prices of goods you can trade) as the missions and events happening around the place and random interdictions are not plugged into the dynamic galaxy simulation yet. Also there is no mining or player initiated interdictions or proper exploration gameplay in yet. So if you are looking for the intended experience I would wait, as all of that will come.

if you can spare the 15 pounds, go buy into beta IMHO. If you dont have something to eat next few days cause of spending it into the game, dont buy the game ^^

I think sp online you will be fairly save with your internet connection. Most data is when other players are around.

if you want to be good dogfighter you should start practicing now ;)

anyway what you call good dogfight, combat scenarios, especially incursion, is challenging enough (they are all offline single player training missions).

combat zones can be challenging (high intensity even against NPC, as they tend to attack you first and in greater numbers, sometimes i see 5 npc's shooting at me same time and there are cobras, condas, side, type9).

also you can practice against law enforcement - just kill some authority ships and they will send more, problem is that they are not challenging, it's much more challenging to keep your ship far enough from station's guns ;)

nav beacons in anarchy systems are fun place too, especially if you have a bounty on yourself+at least 1 tonne of some crap in your cargo bay, then you will be attacked by viper/eagle bounty hunters, cobra, conda, side pirates and all at the same time ;) and if there are players, well, the more the merrier :)

but you can wait till final release is out too.
