My aardvarks won't breed

My first animal in my zoo were aardvarks, I've had the same exhibit going since the beginning. Normally keeping one and replacing the other when they die or if I wasn't happy with the genetics. Currently I have a pretty good aardvark and its mate died so I got a new one from the market. Now they won't breed, the reason? It says one already has a mate so it won't breed with the new animal. But no mate is listed for either of them. I think I'll store them both in the trade center, they have good genetics that I don't want to loose.

Is it possible for you to post a screenshot that shows compare mates for each potential mate of the animal you want to breed? The compare mates screen will show if there is an inbreeding issue. You may also want to check on the fertility rating of each animal. One more thing to consider, with the aardvarks I have been able to have only 1 male and 1 female in the habitat. If you are trying to place 2 females in a habitat with a male that could be where you are having this issue arise.

None of that is the issue, I've already checked. I'll have to get into the game and double check, but fertility is in the green, but that isn't the issue. It says they can not breed because there is already a mate. One of them is tagged to as having a different mate so will not breed with a new one. I bought a new aardvark in seeing if that would do anything but I haven't played around with it yet. I spent most of my time trying to sort out peafowl and komodo dragons who suddenly turned to 0.0 age from adults when put into the trade center.

I haven't played with aardvarks much as I'm working my way through career but two suggestions:

a) have you checked in the zoopedia that they don't mate for life? If they did then it's right that they wouldn't take a new mate just because their old mate was gone (or dead)

b) have you checked that your enclosure isn't still registering the old mate as being in there (even greyed out and saying 'in trade centre'. If it hasn't properly registered their removal or they are in the trade centre but haven't sold it will still count them towards the enclosure sometimes. It's a known bug and they are working on a fix. I have heard that deleting the habitat gate and then adding again may fix it.

I haven't checked if they mate for life(though in RL they do no, not that it means much), but I have switched mates in the past without issue. It looks like it is the female that is the issue, but under mates there is nothing listed. If I use the check mate option the only male that comes up is the one I was trying to match her with and a new one I just bought. Checking both of them to her I get the message
'animal with existing mates cannot mate with anyone else.'
and under current mates None

So I don't know. I did try to move her to the quarantine center but it didn't help. I've already bought a new female but I still have her so I'll try deleting the gate and see if that does anything.

Even animals that mate for life will take a new mate if they loose their current mate. Some animals will also 'divorce' even after many years together. Others will 'cheat', it isn't uncommon with geese. The male will sneak off and breed with a different female.
