My apologies to the commander leaving Aulin

Earlier this evening I left Aulin and head towards Eranin. In front of me was a Sidewinder heading the same way, which I targeted for info. I initiated my hyperdrive and noticed it was taking ages to charge, so I cancelled and slowly realised that the Sidewinder was losing shields fast and getting the life sucked out of it. I immediately slowed and reversed at top speed, but to no avail. It went pop. I was mortified

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise unreservedly and reassure this commander that I was not griefing them, it was a simple mistake.

Erm? Does the hyperdrive damage other ships in the vicinity or something? I did not know this.

nope. but a nearby ship might masslock you when you're trying to jump. this results in longer charge time, all the while your ship heats up. too much heat -> ship goes BOOM!

so the OP masslocked the siddy that was trying to jump

If you don't notice the other ship and you don't notice your heat going up then it's all too easy for an inexperienced commander to get a one way trip to oblivion.

Happens every now and then. You just have to disengage the hyperdrive & manoeuver so that you can safely engage it again.

While it is unfortunate that the other Commander exploded and I feel bad for him, it is a pretty hilarious accident. Anyone happen to know the minimum safe distance to prevent such a thing?

I've found that I need to be 3k from the nearest ship to have no mass locking. I might be wrong though as I haven't had much time with this build at all due to life rubbish.

I knew about mass-locking with star ports, but did not know it could happen with other ships. can I just confirm again, 'mass-locking' is not a mounted weapon, but the act of other ships being too near for you to jump out the system. If a ship is too near, the ship attempting to jump will have their charge time effected (drastically slowed down), while the ship continues to heat up in the normal way. If left un checked you explode due to the over heating ship.

To combat this event, you take your frameshift drive offline which effectively starts to cool down the ship, while cooling down, move away from other ships around you...... and when heat levels back around 50%, the drive can be restarted, and a jump attempt can be made...

is that right?

You can be mass-locked by asteroids, too. As far as cancelling a jump, you don't have to wait until you cool to a certain percentage. The only time you have any sort of delay on supercruise or hyperspace (not entirely sure about hyperspace) is when you just exited into "normal" space.

I think you possibly mis-read my last comment, I am speaking about Hyperspace Jumps, I was lead to believe that If the ships heat level is at 99%, I cannot engage the hyper-drive as it will take me past 100% and I will explode. So if I have a mass-lock event and the drive takes ages to charge, I can take the drive offline to cancel the current jump attempt.

I can restart the drive without any delay, but I still have to wait for the ship temperature to drop to a level that will allow a hyperspace jump to occur, which is usually 55-60%. When the drive has charged to jump again, ship heat level will be close to 100% again, but will still allow the jump.

Nope. You can cancel a jump whenever you want and then restart it at any percentage even if you're over 100%. If you're worried about overheating while charging for a jump, you should be able to deploy a heat sink if you have any. Not sure when you start taking heat damage but I think someone said it's 150%.

really? wow.. is there any official documentation to ED? as I seem to get told one thing from one person then told something different from another (no disrespect to you), and my trouble is I believe everyone.

No problem. Feel free to test it yourself. I've personally cancelled a jump at 121% and restarted it at 105% just to see if I could. No documentation that I've seen mentions anything like that, though. Maybe you can find something like that in the DDA.
