My best fight sofar! Novice Viper vs. Expert Federal Dropship

It was time to do it. The mission that would gave me my Petty Officer rank. I've been holding off. But feeling comfy in my Viper I decided to go for it.

The Navy supplied me with a mission to kill the Gen. Miller. So I went out to the star system and quickly I found him. He wasn't wanted so I had to hover a little bit close to him and wait if he would make the first shot.

He did, getting instant wanted. So I could work my way through. Managing the power distrubution carefully throughout the fight. Using chaffs to confuse the Dropship's turrets.

A battle of almost 10 minutes. One of my greatest.

That was awesome Commander ! I have just started upgrading a Viper and you have convinced me to fit Chaff launchers, great fight ! A quick question, what weapons do you have on the bottom/medium hardpoints ?

Seriously, why does everones chaff launcher seem to work apart from mine? I use it and no matter what, turreted and gimballed weapons still hit me dead on

I find if I target the Power Plant large ships die much quicker than just chewing through hull. I think the default hotkey is Y

I ended up having to use multi-cannons and large caliber cannons on this guy. My beam lasers just wouldn't hurt him.

Second that powerplant idea. I killed a competent fed dropship in my adder. We were both around 50% hull when I took out his power plant and he blew up. If I hadn't it would have been the end for me

Always does.. Killing Eagle's with my Viper is not that satisfying

so I stay close to feel the boom... that gives at least some good feeling

Should have waited till he shot you mate! Then he would get wanted and not you ! Great fight, specially love the beam lasers

I got report crimes off so the police don't turn up, so he wouldn't have been wanted.

Must be a major purge going on, Generals are dropping like flies.

Getting decent at killing these dropships. No ammo used, no SCBs used, no hull or module damage taken. Four minutes and twenty-five seconds from my first shot to my last.

I ditched the wake scanner and FSD interdictor after this fight, I never needed them for any of these assassinations. Dead weight and enough of it that I could feel it.

Lasers, especially beam lasers have significant damage drop off over distance.

For targets with a lot of armor, like these guys, you need to get in close.

I've been thinking of also ditching the scanners and interdictors, didn't realise the beams drop off over distance, I thought I was just missing more

I think they do about half damage at ~3km vs. ~1km. Focused lasers seem to lose less, but I've been having trouble finding them to do some serious testing.
