My first reaction on reading the opening sentence was going to be to suggest the FAS, which is probably the non-exploration ship in which I've spent the most time and which makes a great little all-rounder. But then you mentioned aesthetics, and the FAS has a profile that only a Federal designer could love.
Then you described the Cobra as a pancake and I almost closed the browser in disgust, but to be fair if you didn't grow up with the MkIII as many Elite and FE2 pilots did I can perhaps understand. I still think the Cobra is beautiful (and will look amazing flying through gas clouds, if such a thing ever happens) but it is an unusual design by modern space game standards.
Ultimately I'll have to reluctantly agree with most other posters' assessment and advise you get a Python. It's not a ship I've ever personally got on with (I have one, but it's stripped and mothballed) but if you want to do everything in a single hull it definitely ticks most of the boxes. Just be sure to Engineer it as soon as practical; even A-rated it's versatile but nothing to write home about, but as soon as you give it some DD5s and a bit of weapon tweaking it's a whole new ship.
