I first purchased beta access at the start of Beta 1.0. Unfortunately, it was an experience filled with frustration but nothing caused by my DK2 or the VR implementation, it was a defect preventing me from launching the game in full screen mode with my GTX 880M (Asus G750JZ). The game worked fine in windowed mode but Oculus mode disabled the windowed option. Fortunately, I was able to work around this issue by manually editing the graphics config file. It was "playable" at that point. However, my frame rate was about 50FPS at best. Jumping into hyperspace was nauseating to the point I had to keep my eyes closed until the ride was over (I am very sensitive to simulation sickness). At best, I could play the game for about 20-30min at a time before needing a break.
Then Beta 2.0 came along and broke my work around. I edited the config file again but Oculus mode apparently ignores those values. After much frustration, I lost hope and sat that release out. I just accepted the fact that my issue was off the dev radar do to the limited scope of impact in the community.
When the Beta 3.0 release notes were posted, I read them over and over but didn't see anything that looked like a fix for my full screen issue. I went ahead and installed it and, to my surprise, my full screen issue was resolved. Not only that but it was running 100% better in Oculus Mode compared to Beta 1.0. I expected windowed mode to be more taxing on the GPU and I knew improvements would come with the latest Oculus SDK but I had no idea it would have been this much of an improvement. I logged about 10 hours of playing this weekend, all with the DK2 on. This is currently the only VR game that I can play for extended periods without a break (even though I should let my eyes rest...). I can comfortably play for over 3 hours without feeling the need to take it off. The only time I felt the slightest hint of motion sickness was mining and that was not do to low frame rate, it was just because of all the spinning around I was doing.
I just want to extend a huge thanks on behalf of myself and my fellow Asus G750JZ owners to the talented bug smashers that resolved this issue and put E
back on the top of my favorite games list. I hope Chris Roberts and team are taking good notes on VR implementation.
tl;dr - My VR experience went from good to bad to great.
