General / Off-Topic My dog ate a pigeon.

My cat went through a phase of bringing home pigeons in various states of dead. (These birds are Sunday roast big!).
Arriving home after work I could always tell when she had caught one, because it looked like someone had shot a pillow outside my house. With a nice trail of even more feathers leading up the alley way into my garden.

I never knew ‘an’ pigeon contained two pillows worth of feathers....

My cat growing up used to catch and eat sparrows, she was damn good at it. Probably ate one per week. She would eat them the same way each time. Breast and body first, save the head for last as a crunchy treat, always naught but a beak, two legs, and some flight feathers left behind.

As for this dog - she's fast, but generally not fast enough to catch a bird with full flight capability. My guess is the pigeon was already wounded when she caught it. We have a lot of hawks around here who prey on pigeons, and it isn't rare to walk out of the house and find one of those feather explosions on the lawn like you described. This one I figured probably scraped through an encounter with a hawk, and found itself a bush to hide under. It was still alive when she first had it.

Anyway - a hearty breakfast for mischievous little pup :)

But did your doggo bake a pigeon pie first?

She did not - she just pranced around the yard to keep it away from me while she worked on it. Sweet girl :)
