My Elite Story: Why am I exploring? ELWs and the Northwest Passage.

tl;dr I went looking for a fast route to Colonia. I found many ELWs which I will list, and got to Colonia in 135 jumps through largely undiscovered space. Not the fastest, but worth it for being a road less traveled.

I've been dinking around in this game off and on since the beginning. I'm currently on my third and final commander, Viridian-. The first was lost and the second had the stupid name I'm currently using here. I never really did anything of note until I decided to get myself to Colonia and finally unlock the engineers there. I didn't go about it in a normal way though. A while back I had started exploring to the northwest of the bubble using Nova Aquila No 3 as my starting point. I'd go about a thousand light years downward and wander around where few bother to go. I just wanted to put my name on stuff and get credits. From there I started making my way to denser regions to the north on the same plane. I ended up in undiscovered country. Every trip out, I'd usually find at least one Earth-like world. I found a point where I could chart a course a quarter of the way to Colonia with around 30 jumps. That is when I decided to finally go there. The end point of this course happened to land me in a nice system with an ELW that I could put my name on, Flyooe Hypoea MJ-O d7-3. From there I charted a course straight to Colonia. I forget how far but it's something like 15,000ly. It was only 67 jumps. No alt-tabbing. No re-plotting. Just set a course and go. A neutron freeway, if you will. I'm sure this is known to many, but it was new to me. At this point I decided to connect the legs of this journey and make an all neutron path from Sol to Colonia with as little re-plotting as possible. I started calling it The Northwest Passage as a bit of a joke to myself. Like the real Northwest Passage, it turned out to be less of a shortcut than it seemed but unlike the real one, global warming won't be changing that. It was still something to occupy my time and by cutting out all the alt-tabbing to spansh.co.uk by using about a dozen bookmarks in the galaxy map I think it's a quick enough route for me.

When I finally connected it all and had finally gone to Colonia and back, I had discovered many ELWs along the way. Nearly every star I jumped to along a 17,000ly stretch was undiscovered. I found a new reason to explore this route. I want to map a line of ELW's from Sol to Colonia. None of it really means anything. The game is not going to utilize these habitable worlds as way points on the journey, but I like pretending it might someday. That npcs might populate these worlds, make stations and create a real bridge to Colonia with maybe some shipyards? That would be nice. Also, are there as many ELW's along any route? Am I doing anything other than playing a mini game within this game with my own made up objectives? Anyway, I thought I'd share this in case anyone would like to take my road less traveled or even see where else this neutron freeway can go.

My AspX has a 72.8ly range so results may vary but here is the route I take starting at Nova Aquila No 3:
Leg 1: The tricky bit, 9 jumps
1: Nova Aquila 3
2: Col 359 Sector ZZ-P d5-13
3: Col 359 Sector LN-K d8-0
4: Swoiwns MJ-O d7-26
5: Swoiwns GN-R d5-22 (You may wish to detour from here to Swoiwns SU-N d7-7 for an ELW)
6: Swoiwns NU-N d7-20
7: Swoiwns DD-I d10-18 (includes a fuel stop)
8: Prooe Drye YZ-F d11-2
9: Prooe Drye KM-D d12-3

Leg 2: 31 jumps
Plot a course to Flyooe Hypoea MJ-O d7-3 That's it.

Leg 3: 67 jumps
Plot a course to Tir. If you plot a course to Colonia, it will veer off the neutron highway a bit too early.

Now for the ELW's. You will want to ignore the second leg and plot to each ELW instead if you want to get them all. You'll still end up in the same place... roughly.
1: Swoiwns SU-N d7-7 (mentioned in the first leg)
2: Cojeou RG-J d10-0
3: Yaikou YG-T d4-1
4: Chaluia OS-J c25-0
*5: Nyeajeau XN-K c8-2
*6: Nyeajeau VT-R d4-5 (This is an ELW orbiting a neutron star. My head hurts just thinking about it)
*7: Nyeajeau ZV-C c13-0
8: Flyooe Hypoea MJ-O d7-3
9: Eaembie QX-A d1-0
10: Eaembie XA-L d9-7
11: Flyae Phrua XV-T d4-3
* These are a bit off the path, but if you go from them to Eagle Sector IR-W d1-105, around 15-20 jumps if I remember correctly, there's an asteroid station to turn in data.

There are a few more ELWs around somewhere that I forgot to bookmark, but I'm sure there are many more along the path to find. If you do find more along the path it would be cool if you post them here so I can book mark them. I like expanding my little story. I realize that my name is already on a lot of the systems along the second leg of this path, but I can't visit all of it, and you can take a turn at any point and make your own discoveries. I've wandered around the area near Flyooe Hypoea MJ-O d7-3 quite a lot. It's almost like a neighborhood only missing the people. If I ever had a choice of where to put a space station, it would be there.

Anyway, I have been the space crazed lone nutbag Viridian- O7 everyone.

Welcome, and thanks for the write-up! Always good to see a fresh take on exploration. There was this part:

Also, are there as many ELW's along any route?
When it comes to ELWs, there is a subtle difference between going through the galactic core and going through elsewhere. See my guide to finding Earth-like worlds if you'd like some more information on this. In the end though, the best bet to improve chances is by filtering for star types: that'll increase them much higher than travelling through the core will. The latter would only make a difference over tens of thousands of systems.

So yes, there are as many ELWs along your route as there are elsewhere. It's just as good as others are.

Well that's a bit discouraging. I have read your guide (probably a couple times over the years) and while it's an excellent resource for random exploration I've found that it's best to filter out only the M,L,T, and Y stars when trying to populate a particular area with ELWs. That doesn't really matter though. It was fun pretending for a while, but if the game is never going to utilize this apparently abundant resource and I don't really have much need of credits, I may as well switch gears and find more interesting things.

Well, yes: there's plenty more to exploration than finding ELWs. You could search for stuff that interests other people, you could search for stuff that interests you. There are also community initiatives, expeditions and surveys, that you could join. It's a good way of meeting other explorers and learning from them, too.

Well, I may or may not have found one in the past. I didn't get a codex entry when I visited the one nearest Sol, though it was undiscovered for me. When I visited the one in Eodgorph LM-W e1-167 I did get a codex entry which was the only immediate indication that anything was different about it. If the green parts are too small to notice and you've already got the codex entry for that region, the only clue is in the description in the system map. The lizard part of my brain rejects the idea of looking at the description of every gas giant that might be hiding some little green spots. I'll keep an eye out but no promises. Seems like I might find Raxxla first lol
