My expedition to California Nebula

Hi guys. Just wanted to share my experience in exploring the California Nebula, some 1000ly from populated space. I think it's the one in the background of current Elite logo intro in the game. I equipped my Adder with Basic Discovery Scanner and Detailed Surface Scanner. Outfitted it so it can jump 16ly and a solid fuel scoop and headed there. It took me three days to get there (I'm a casual player so it was some four to five hours game time).

Here are some images on my way there:

And when I finaly got there, I started exploring. I found that the view of the nebula was much better just off the edge of nebula than deep inside the nebula. Which actualy makes sense. When you're inside, nebula is half as dense in each direction.

I remember David Braben saying how finding earth like planet is like a holy grail of exploring, so I figured out the whole trip will pay off if I find one. And I tought maybe, just maybe, if it's in such a nice location with such a nice view it might be a big deal. :) And then, after some five days in nebula, I finaly found it:

Once I found it I decided to head back and avoid getting destroyed until I sell my data to firs respectable outpost or a station.

The whole trip earned me some 750.000 which is quite disappointing. I expected to earn at least a million from that earth like planet discovery, but that system was sold for abut 60k, much like another system I discovered along the way. Probably one with many metal rich planets. I think developers should make exploration a bit more interesting, or at least make us search for that jack pot, like earth like planets. That would make all that suffering bearable. Lucky
for me, I wasn't in for the money, I just wanted to blaze my own trail as they say :) Hoping that maybe I'm the first to discover that planet (probably not).

That is a nice one. Have visited the california nebula myself but did not discovered this planed. Well done...

I did the same trip out there, I stopped off at the nebula closer also, though i made about 2 million in the process :) there is a big system with a black hole out there which got me something like 190K which is a record for me

Thanks guys. I'm preparing a video I made while exploring. I'll post it here when ready. I think I'll head over to Orion nebula next :) But I'll get an ASP first.

Nice, just back from a round trip of the Witch Head and Orion Nebula... no earth like worlds sadly, but several water worlds along the way...similar 900k+cr for c300 systems visited, highest value was 33K.
Focused on only surface scanning those that looked like they might be interesting (ie not just rock or ice!)

Total c16 hours playing for the round trip (max distance 1,100 Ly from the frontier worlds)

Gets very nervous when you start to come back, knowing you have a high value of data, and you start to return to systems with other traffic in them..

PS: you'll like Orion, I didn't have the guts to visit Orion EZ (nervous I might hyperjump into the star and lose my data)- but thats got to be worth a visit..
Also lots of v.densely packed stars making hoping between them v. easy

Yes, I saw those tightly packed stars there. I wanna see it up close :)

Anyway here's a video I made:

I think the problem with the value of systems in nebulas and close to them are lots of people are travelling to them. I met 3 commadners in Maia in the Pleiades Nebula last night. That system which had loads of suns and a black hole only got me 45K. Similar systems out in deep space on the way to nothing of interest have netted me close to 200K.

Perhaps, then explorers should be rewarded every time somebody purchases exploration data that the commander discovered, like a royalty? (You can buy exploration data from the galaxy map.)

However, this might bias explorers to look for uncharted systems with trading outposts -- which are the times it's most tempting for a trader to buy exploration data to find the right. On the other hand, an explorer would not know a priori there happened to be uncharted trading outposts when they showed up. Or perhaps tie system and exploration data together?

The thing I'm trying to wrap my head around are incentives to purchase system data. Thoughts?

You're probably right. I didn't see anyone in California Nebula. But it makes sense. I'll try my exploration in booring generic systems in the middle of nothing :)

Excellent discoveries and beautiful screenshots!

Yeah, it's a shame that discovering an Earth-like world doesn't really pay you all that well. They are rare and it IS a special moment when you find one, especially if it happens to be located in a beautiful environment. But the game doesn't treat them as anything special, which IMO really sucks.

I definitely recommend a trip to the Orion Nebula. Some pretty stunning scenes there, and at least one Earth-like planet that I discovered recently. :)

'Easy' Orionis is nothing special, just your typical giant star, though in a somewhat unusual environment. It's perfectly safe to jump there.

Very nice pics and story. Just because you haven't found the jackpot, doesn't mean it isn't there.

You can check out any time you like, but you may never leave.

What's the band's name again? Eagles? Or Freagles? :D

Thanks for the video. It's a shame that even in Freelancer 12 years ago the nebulas were prettier and scarier than this. Very disappointing.

Well, Freelancer wasn't trying to be scientificaly accurate. Even this is much much more interesting than what actual california nebula looks like:
