My experience with Oculus DK2

Hey all,

I have now been a proud owner of a DK2 since September. Ive spent many an hour playing Elite, strapped up and flying around. My findings are as follows.

The first time you ever try Elite, your are blown away. The level of immersion is nothing like you've ever experienced before. It is a game changer, and really makes you feel like a pilot of your own spaceship.
Dog fighting is exceptional. The way you can track targets by naturally moving your head truly adds to the experience. In my opinion, this is by far the best way to experience this portion of the game. The ability to just glance around the screen, highlighting any ship within your gaze, and saying 'Target Ahead' using VoiceAttack to initiate a lock-on, and then unleashing all multi-cannons is just sublime. I really challenge anyone to beat this experience.
After time however a few cracks start to appear. Anything other than fighting is arguably better without the rift. I love the immersion, but trading, and navigating the galaxy/system map is a real pain. This has much to do with the low resolution of the display, but also the discomfort from long term use of the Rift. Also if you are trying to work out trade routes, writing information down, or updating a spreadsheet(I am a geek), is a real pain, and you have to keep removing the rift.

The Rift is best used when certain criteria are matched.

1: Not tired.
2: Not hungover.
3: Not with other idiots in the house who think its funny to make you jump.
4: Not after a bath or shower.
5: Not with a man cold.

Points 4 and 5 are the same really. Anything that makes you hot, will make the internal lenses steam up.

After long sessions you can start to sweat, and obviously can't easily we wiped off without continuously removing the device. I also find that from session to session the focus seems to drift. One day i will start playing and everything is crystal clear(Within the Rifts limits). And then another day, without anything changing, i can't get anything to focus properly and am having to continually adjust the Oculus(This could be more to do with point 1 above).

Overall however I think this is a must have device. Even thought I have mentioned a few negatives, I wouldn't be without it, and am eagerly awaiting the release date for a full HD version. Hopefully aircon included. This is a game changing device, but not without its issues. I would advise anyone to pick one up if they have the chance. You too can then become a Fan-boy for Oculus Rift.

I hope this is helpful. Any questions, please ask.

Andy

I find warming the lenses up for a few seconds with a hair dryer sorts out all the steaming up issues for a good while. Being reasonably long sighted I can wear it just fine without my glasses. I was amazed by this the first time I tried it, as normally being a glasses wearer means I always have to compromise to get an acceptable solution. I don't have the focus change problem, but I do agree with the rest. I found trading really easy before I got my DK2 and now I tend to avoid it because it gives me too much eye strain. I'm waiting for FD to implement some UI tweaks that will help us out with text. Hopefully it won't be too long, but in the mean time it's still awesome anyway.

I have not used my DK2 with ED at the moment. It's all rigged up to my iRacing simulator. I am waiting for some bugs to be fixed before setting things up. But I can imagine how you feel. Iracing with the DK2 is stunning. And I would imagine ED is just as spectacular.

I also have a Sony T3 and trackIR. That is also a nice setup but my DK2 is another level.

One tip I recommend is usuing one of those USB fans. You can get the ones on a metal bendy arm so you can possition it correctly. This also gives a sense of speed. I read of someone programming their fan to work with their throttle. Full throttle gives big airflow :) Cool stuff.

I need to check the latest SDK as I am still using 1.3. Has anything major changed?

Good stuff

As someone who wears contact lenses, I can tell you that your eyes are not the same day-in, day-out. There are small changes that effect your vision very slightly - but I think with the Rift these are much more noticeable. There are definitely good Rift days, and bad Rift days !

As "the man of the house" I don't have to worry about much using the DK2, but I'm glad I didn't have this back in my frat days.

On that note - are there any free trials at the moment? I'm not a big fan of driving games but wouldn't mind giving it a bash with the Rift. :)

It comes down to the individual experience - I'm tired or hungover most of the time when I'm not drunk or at work, so I don't notice 1 and 2 at all ;). I never have the lenses steam up - probably because I like it cold in my appartment (6°C atm) but it hasn't been an issue during summer either.
Point 4 was an issue, but I solved it two days after receiving the rift by just shaving my head.

Point 3 is valid though - my idiot cat apparently thinks it's funny to freak me out (and boost me into station walls).

6°C ? Dude that for me is like living inside my refrigerator, holy sh..........

I know you said you wasn't a lover of driving games, but Assetto Corsa is very good on Steam.

Pfft, £35 for a genre I don't really like and it seems it's a pain in the neck to get working on the Rift? ;) First thing I do with Rift stuff (if it requires purchasing) is to see if it's got at least "reasonable" support (ED, Euro Truck 2)... seems Assetto is pretty finicky to me.

Er, having a cold apartment would actually make the lenses more likely to Steam up as the warmth of your face will warm up the air in between you and the rift, the cold lenses will attract moisture from the air..

No matter how cold your surroundings, your body temperature is always the same..

:p

It says it has expired but some people say that it is still working, worth a try though.
(add an w at the start, I guess I can't add url's since I don't have enough posts)

Core temperature is always the same, yes (ideally ;)), but skin temperature can go well below that - hands can still operate with unimpaired dexterity when they're at 12°C. Moreover being in the cold means I hardly sweat. Anyway - as I said I got the rift in early August and it hasn't been an issue back then, so you're right - it's an unlikely explanation. I just never had it happen a single time.

And opinion on not being able to see your controller and keyboard?

I don't think the controller would be an issue. We all learn pretty quickly where all the buttons are. Unless you actually look at your joystick to figure out which button to press, I doubt you'll have a problem.

Keyboard is something else. If you touch-type, won't really be an issue once you find the bumps on the [F] & [J] keys. If you hunt and peck, you may want to look into using Voice Attack and training it for all letters and numbers. Alternatively, wait until Sweetie releases his "Commanders Log Oculus."

My main issue is the inability to use Excel to input commodity prices. I usually just take screenshots and update after a session.

Understood... Just a shame a flap or simply tilt mechanism can't be used to allow access back to the real world easily. eg: Tilt the googles up, and view returns to the monitor. ie: So you can update spreadsheets there and then etc.

For me, it's a big turn off I think.
