My first attack on Titan Leigong, didn't go so well

Hey all,

It's Saturday so I have time to play. Yay!

Spent my first couple of hours creating a good Krait Mk II build using a guide provided by Commander Mechan - thank you sir! With this done and Engineered, I took my travel ship - Mr. Jumpy, the DBX - to Teller Horizons in Obassi Osaw. Once there, I called in the Krait Mk II and waited. Once it'd arrived, ~35 minutes, I headed for the Titan...

Things started off just fine, a Hyperdiction en-route to the system, easily evaded, then several interdictions after I'd arrived and was on the way to the Titan, escaped those easily too. Nice. Ship can do just under 550 which makes things quite easy. Got closer and exited Super Cruise when prompted. Approaching the Titan more slowly now, not boosting to keep cool, sitting at 17% heat, which is pretty decent I think? I think perhaps I should have been boosting to minimise Caustic exposure, but I didn't want to alert any nearby Interceptors - assuming they appear during the approach?

During my approach, I'm deploying Caustic Sinks as needed. I have two, but one is disabled to both save power and be my "reserve" just in case, I'll switch to it as needed. A couple of the shutdown pulse things go off, there was some sort of warning prior to this and I could see the expanding wave, so I used the Pulse Neutraliser. I still slowed down - as low as 60ms - but did not get disabled or knocked away, so I'm assuming I timed it properly. I'm nearer the Titan now and can see it in outline, I think about 20km away at this point. Suddenly, my screen goes blank and I've been tabbed out of the game. Argh. Bloody Windows. I'm back within a couple of seconds, but I'm now over 60km away! It could NOT have been a Pulse as, i) there had just been one that I'd successfully blocked, and ii) I was not spinning out of control and shut down. Dunno what happened there.

I was back in the caustic effect area again, so used a couple more Caustic Sinks than I should have had to. I get back to near where I was, and prepare to start using Nanite Torps on those eight upper vent things. I'm running at 17% heat still, so nothing seems to have spotted me and I'm taking no fire. I see other Commanders taking a few hits. Just as I'm about to line up on the nearest vent, I get the message that the Titan's dong is now exposed, so I fly to the underside, switching to regular AX Missiles, hoping to land some hits. I arrive, but no dong, it's still retracted and unable to be shot at. Known issue I think?

I fly back around to the top of the Titan, switching to Nanite Torpedoes once again, but at this moment all hell breaks loose. I'm suddenly under fire from several ships - Scouts and Interceptors I think - as well as the Titan its self. This HURTS. Screw staying at 17% heat, I'm boosting! I get away, but with under 50% hull left! Ouch. I gain some distance, but I'm still taking large amounts of Caustic Damage - I eject a sink... it doesn't work, I try again, nope, third time's a charm - if finally ejects. New sink has some work to do to neutralise what's on the hull still.

Next sink is full - not in the caustic cloud again yet, this is just from the damage I took - so I eject that, it works first time. I have ONE sink left on this Launcher, and it's still filling up! I eject that one, thinking this must be it, but I'm still taking caustic damage. Not actively under attack - at 17% heat and some distance from the Titan now - but nor am I in the caustic cloud area yet either. I switch to the other Caustic Sink module, disabling the first so I stay cool and it has just ONE Sink in it. How? I used all seven from the first one, sure, but the second has been inactive all this time. I have ONE Caustic Sink to get me out through the cloud. I'm at 45% hull from the damage I took earlier. I decide it's time to leave this instance, as it'd been glitchy and my ship has damage. I get through the cloud, but am now out of Caustic Sinks.

I'm taking really quite rapid hull damage at this point, due to lack of Caustic Sinks. I'd hoped that 2.4k hull would last a bit longer, but I guess not lol. I deploy Repair Limpets, but they cannot keep up with the damage. I do a deliberate overheat to remove the effect, then deploy more Repair Limpets while travelling further away from the Titan. I lock back on to the Obassi Osaw system and jump...

Docked, some small repairs needed, but too knackered now for another trip. Likely the Titan will fall very soon, about 25% of the final ring left.

Well, I couldn't end my session on a "meh" because things didn't go so well. So, as this is my last chance to attack this Titan - its demise was imminent - I thought I'd give it another go, but this time in my Private Group, no other members online.

This time things went MUCH more smoothly. I approached the Titan, usual Hyper and regular Interdictions, used the anti shut-down thingy again - slowing to ~60ms when the wave hit, but not shut down - and went through the caustic clouds. This time, I did not get teleported 40km back after the game tabbed out, but arrived fairly promptly. Used half the number of Caustic sinks as a result.

I approach the Titan, I'm cold, 19% heat - more on that in a moment - and start shooting the vents. Get a couple of solid hits when I get the Dong exposed message. I fly around, but, once again it's NOT deployed, remaining retracted. Annoying. I wait some time - I'm cold enough to not be bothered - before the vents open again and proceed to get solid hits on five or six of them. Once again, I get the exposed Dong message, so I go looking for it and... THERE IT IS in all its glowing glory. Nice. I switch to AX Missiles and hit it until it stops taking damage, which was much a shorter time than I expected.

I move away and around the Titan, expecting another round of heat vent Nanite missile strikes but no, I think the Titan is done. It's just sat there, explosions all over it and the vents aren't opening again. Having gotten a little warm firing those AX Missiles - 30% heat - I attract the attention of some ships and come under attack, by the Titan too. Get a caustic torpedo to the face, thanks to a momentary lack of flying ability. However, I gain a little distance and hide in the cold again.

Continuing to watch the Titan, the mass of explosions all over it does not subside. I get closer once more, but the vents can no longer be targetted, and the Dong remains exposed, but not glowing like it'd usually be. I think the Titan is done, I evidently single-handedly destroyed it, alone, without any aid. Drax would be proud lol.

I leave the area, passing once again through the caustic cloud, no glitches with Caustic sinks this time, I have six remaining after exiting the cloud. I'm checking my modules when I notice that I left both my AFMU unit and the FSD on while near the Titan, yikes. I turn them off and I'm at 14% heat - wondered why I was running a bit hotter than before. I was at 17% last time because I left the FSD on by mistake. AFMU generates a LOT of heat!

Note: Caustic sinks seem to need a longer press on the button before they deploy, a quick tap doesn't do it. More a click and hold for half a second.

As I'm moving away - out of mass lock now and clear to jump - I do some spot repairs on modules (AFMU back on for a bit) as well as some hull repairs. Not paying attention, I get hit by another wave, taking a chunk out of my hull, but I recovered quickly. I know I could just pay for repairs at a station - not module was under 90% - but I like to role play as servicing my ship in the field, rather than paying for it.

Back docked at the station now, cashing in my vast 3 Million credits in Combat Bonds lol. Missed out on several times that due to the dong not being exposed as it should, hopefully FDev can do some more work on this to make it more reliable.

Ok, this second attempt was actually quite fun. I fluffed it a few times, taking damage I perhaps didn't need to, but my tactics worked. I wish I'd been able to jump on this earlier, but I simply did not have the time until today (Saturday game-time) due to my weekend-only play schedule. I would have liked to do a few more runs at Leigong to build experience, but I think I'll be good for the next one now.

Anyway, thought I'd share my experience. It's a shame that first instance was a bit buggy, but the second one was better. I'd have LOVED to do it with more Commanders present, but more players can sometimes cause issues. Whether it was a basic ED netcode issue or someone with a poor connection / PC I don't know. I'm confident my hardware is up to snuff though, plus, when I've teamed with players I know have good hardware and connections, I don't get issues. Will try again of course, but will revert to my PG or even Solo sooner if issues occur once more.

Wonder if there will be another scheduled "Boom" event like with the first Titan? Dunno if there's a "I witnessed the BOOM" reward / decal whatever lol.

You'd be welcome to join in our PG next time around. If you can't find any better offer! ;)

Thanks, might take you up on that. Most of my friends who used to play ED don't any more, so I'd welcome a chance to team up. I generally only do weekends though, and game time is my time at the mo.

I am fairly comfortable with the whole approach now. My ship is nice and chilly, so I really don't get bothered unless something really annoys the Titan. When that happens, even if I'm super cold, I still seem to get detected. I can readily flee at that point though and my cold ship means I lose any chasing ships quite quickly.

I'm sure there are still a few fine points I need to pick up on, such as that suddenly being detected thing while still cold. Plus, on a couple of occasions, I was pottering around, nice and chilly, no boost, no weapon use, and my temp would creep up to 24% and stay there. Does getting too close to the Titan warm me up or something?

Will do a sight-seeing tour when the Titan is due to blow. Have actually just persuaded one friend to come back in-game for that event. Haven't seen an announcement yet. If the boom this time is mid-week, then it's doubtful either of us will be about sadly.

The small group I play with are pretty laid-back and friendly - if you do decide to fly with us, send me a friend request (if we aren't already...) same name, and we can work it from there.

When Taranis was about to pop, my super cool Clipper was spotted by an interceptor and I spent the last 2 minutes of the 'event' playing tag with it - it was a brilliant event, we should be eating our popcorn and toasting marshmallows around Leigong's carcase tonight also.

Not in-game at the moment, but will do that when next in-game. I think the event is 21:00 ish game-time isn't it?

With Taranis, I was in my less-than-cool Mamba, created mostly from bits I already had in storage, so it ran warmer than it needed too. It was darn fast though. I got spotted literal seconds before Taranis blew, so was dodging right until the moment, when I turned to face it. Took some hits, but survived.

On a side note, I had actually recently bought a Clipper and considered using it, however, it needed EVERYTHING engineering so I went with the Mamba. Now in a Krait II, which is MUCH better. I really like the sneaky sneaky nature of it, being so cold.

Probably won't be there tonight but I have just visited my first Titan, Leigong, for a look see using the Orca that I used to do evacuations with just after the Maelstroms arrived. It got in and out relatively easily and with over half the hull remaining. Of course extreme speed was my saving grace though it can go pretty cold.
